Siena Volleyball began with a couple of early leads in the opening two sets, but consistency was difficult to find as the Saints dropped a 3-0 match (18-25, 16-25, 13-25) to Iona on Sunday afternoon at the Hynes Athletics Center.
The Saints (2-20, 2-10 MAAC) hit just .068 for the match.
In the first set, Siena led 6-4 with kills from junior right side
Olga Sawinska and two from junior outside hitter
Sara Wagner. The Gaels took six of the following seven points with Hope Matschner serving to go up 10-7. The Saints would get within a point on a Wagner kill and a Gaels' attack error, but Iona came back with four straight points, punctuated by an ace from Sanem Bas. Siena struck back to close the deficit to 20-18 after an ace from
Payton Hinkle. Iona took the last five points of the set with Matschner picking up an ace to close it.
Siena held a 9-8 lead in the second set after another Hinkle ace. Wagner, Sawinska and
Monet Latunde all had kills as well to provide the Saints with the lead. Iona made a 6-0 run to push ahead 14-9. The teams mostly traded points until Siena reeled off three straight points to cut it within 20-16 on a kill by
Anny Montano and two Gaels' attack errors. Once again, Iona closed strong by winning the last five points with Bas serving behind the line.
The third set started out even with the teams splitting the first 10 points. Iona won six of seven points to take an 11-6 lead. Siena got back within two by taking four of five points. The Gaels went on a 9-0 run with Rose Porter in service and finished by winning 12 of 14 to take the set and the victory.
Next, Siena will host Rider (6-14, 5-6 MAAC) on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
