NEW ROCHELLE, NY – Siena Men's Soccer saw its program record-tying five-match win streak come to a close on Wednesday afternoon to a team that recently concluded an eight-match win streak of its own. The Saints (6-7, 6-2) dropped a tight 2-1 decision to first place Iona (9-3, 7-1) at Mazzella Field in New Rochelle, New York.
Following a relatively quiet open to the first half between the top two teams in the conference, the Gaels took advantage of a late foul in the box to get on the board by way of a penalty kick conversion by Camil Azzam Ruiz in the 29
th minute. The home team capitalized again just 80 seconds later by way of Aly Camara to pull out to a late first-half advantage that would not be relinquished.
Despite quickly falling into a multi-goal hole, Siena quickly rebounded with a goal of its own to get back into the match just before the half. Senior
Bilal Hersi dribbled a ball down the left sideline for a cross to junior
Zach Gardner to score in the 40
th minute, marking Hersi's third straight and Gardner's fourth straight match with a point.
Iona held a 7-6 shots advantage in the second half and 13-8 on the day, while attempting five of seven corner kick opportunities. Three of Gardner's team-leading four shots went on-goal, while sophomore
Magnus Saaby also attempted a pair of shots.
With just two regular season matches remaining and Siena having already locked up a postseason berth, the Saints will look to rebound at third-place Manhattan in Riverdale, New York on Saturday, October 28 at 2 PM.
