LOUDONVILLE, NY – A combination of the future and the old guard helped Siena Women's Soccer complete its 2023 season on a high note Wednesday afternoon. Freshmen standouts
Julia Dening and
Megan Stowell connected to open the scoring, and senior captains
Annie Bagnall and
Grace Dimkopoulos hooked up on the game-winner, as Siena secured its 13
th straight victory over Iona with a 2-1 decision at Hickey Field.
Picked eighth in the MAAC Preseason Coaches' Poll, a youthful Siena (4-9-4, 3-4-3) squad finishes tied for seventh in the standings – and just one point shy of a postseason berth – while achieving a four-spot improvement from a year ago. The future is bright for the Saints who are expected to return eight starters and players who accounted for 16 of the team's 21 goals in 2024, after receiving a MAAC-high 70% (45 of 64) of its points from underclassmen this season.
Siena generated 10 shots and seven corners during a solid first half performance, which yielded a goal in the 18
th minute. MAAC Rookie of the Year contenders Stowell and Dening connected, with Dening finishing her fourth goal of the fall.
The Saints then doubled their advantage in the 70
th minute with what would later prove to be the decisive score. Dimkopoulos served in a corner which Bagnall corralled, spun, and fired home for her fourth goal.
Iona (1-15-3, 0-7-3) responded less than four minutes later on a Sofia Giamanco goal, but it was too little too late as Siena increased its unbeaten streak over the Gaels in Loudonville to 14 straight (12-0-2).
Overall, the Saints held an 18-13 shot advantage and attempted 12 corners – just three of the program-record – to snap a 16-match home winless streak (0-10-6). The victory marked the first for Siena in Loudonville since defeating Iona in the MAAC Quarterfinals on Halloween 2021.
The senior keepers split duty in goal for the Saints, with
Brooke Boermeester registering one save during a scoreless first half and
Angela Fini stopping three shots in the final stanza. All nine Siena seniors played – included four who started – in their final appearances on Hickey Field.
Savannah Rogers made four saves in 74 minutes of action for the Gaels who finish the season in the MAAC basement. Iona will head into 2024 riding a 15-match road winless streak (0-14-1), and will open conference play next season looking to snap a 13-match winless skid (0-10-3) in MAAC matches.
