LOUDONVILLE, NY – Saints Volleyball gave a competitive tussle with visiting Canisius in an opening set that featured 13 ties and four lead changes, but Siena was edged out and eventually was defeated 3-0 (22-25, 12-25 14-25) against the Golden Griffins on Saturday afternoon at the UHY Center.
The Saints (2-22, 2-12 MAAC) were led by an inspiring effort by junior outside hitter
Sara Wagner, who put down a game-high 16 kills on a highly efficient .333 hitting percentage, on International Student Appreciation Match.
Wagner, who is a native of Bielsko-Biala, Poland, is one of six international student-athletes on the Saints' roster. Before the match, all international students were recognized and international music played throughout the afternoon. At intermission, the Siena Bhangra dance team performed for the fans.
Wagner came out striking on fire with 10 kills in the first set alone. Back-to-back kills by Wagner put Siena ahead 17-16. Another kill by Wagner also tied the score at 21 apiece. The Golden Griffin's Isabella Mosquera answered with a kill and Wagner was able to follow up with another to make it 22-all. With Canisius' Ella Bourque serving, the Golden Griffins won the final three points on kills to wrap the set.
In the second set, the Golden Griffins led 14-10 and then went on a 7-0 run aided by a pair of Mosquera kills and four Siena attacking errors.
Siena led 6-4 in the third set, but Canisius responded with another 7-0 run with three kills, a service errors, an ace and two Siena attacking errors. Siena would get as close as three at 16-13, but Canisius had a 6-0 run capitalized by a Ella Loussia kill.
Canisius (7-14, 5-8 MAAC) received 12 kills from Loussia.
Freshmen
Oliwia Majtyka (14 assists) and
Payton Hinkle (12 digs) were the Saints' leaders in their respective categories.
On Sunday, Siena hosts Niagara (9-12, 8-5 MAAC) at 1 p.m.
