LOUDONVILLE, NY – Siena Volleyball carried leads into a pair of sets, but were unable to keep the momentum moving in their favor as the Saints dropped a 3-0 (21-25, 17-25, 23-25) match to MAAC foe Manhattan on Sunday afternoon at the UHY Center.
The Saints (2-16, 2-6 MAAC) held leads of 15-12 in the first set as well as 17-12 in the third set before the Jaspers rallied back to take both sets.
In the opening set, a 5-0 Siena run highlighted by a pair of kills from
Olga Sawinska and one from
Monet Latunde gave them a three-point advantage.
Manhattan came right back with a 6-0 run behind three kills from Camila Gomez to recapture the lead.
Siena would tie it at 18 on a Sawinska kill, but another Gomez kill and a Siena attack error provide a two-point lead for the Jaspers. Manhattan closed it out on a kill by Abby Morreale.
The Jaspers raced out an 8-4 lead after three attack errors, a service error and a bad set by Siena.
Manhattan led 15-8 on an ace from Sarah Emmons. Siena got as close as a four-point margin on two kills from
Kayla Jones and one from
Sara Wagner.
The Jaspers had another 4-0 run to take a 21-13 advantage before closing it out on a Morreale kill.
The third set was the most competitive of the three with the Saints winning six of seven points during one stretch to open a five-point advantage.
Two kills by Wagner and one by Jones made it 17-12 Siena.
Manhattan (4-15, 2-6 MAAC) won seven of the next nine to tie it at 19 all and then went ahead after two kills from Gomez.
Wagner and Meyer put Siena back on top at 23-23, but the Jaspers closed it after taking advantage of two Siena attack errors and a kill by Mikayla Curran.
It was a big day for the freshmen on the Saints. Jones finished with a career-high 10 kills on a .400 hitting percentage.
Sonja Meyer continued her strong weekend with an eight-kill performance on a .364 hitting percentage.
And, a day after establishing a new career high in digs with 16, freshman libero
Payton Hinkle reset that number with 18 on the day.
Siena hit .211 as a team, but hurt themselves at the service line by registering just one ace against eight service errors.
Siena will next travel to Western New York to take on Niagara and Canisius on Saturday and Sunday.
