Junior’s Jolt Propels Saints into Postseason

Early Siena Score Gives Men’s Soccer First Round Bye in 2023 MAAC Championship

LOUDONVILLE, NY – Siena Men's Soccer's remarkable turnaround this season can be credited to many different pieces of fourth-year head coach Graciano Brito's squad, but it has been by way of upperclassmen as of late that paved the way for the team to carry weighty momentum into the postseason.

The Saints (8-8, 8-2) rounded out the 2023 regular season with their program record eighth MAAC victory in a 1-0 win over I-87 rival Marist (6-7-2, 4-4-2) at Hickey Field on Wednesday afternoon.

The win guarantees the Green and Gold the No. 2 seed in the upcoming 2023 MAAC Men's Soccer Championship and a bye in the Quarterfinal round. Competing as the No. 2 seed for the fifth time in program history and the first time since 2010, Siena will host a MAAC Semifinal match at Hickey Field on Thursday, November 9, with opponent to be determined.

Despite being out-shot, 17-5, by the Red Foxes, Siena weathered the storm defensively after being put up early by a breakaway goal from senior Junior Kone in the second minute of play, with help from junior Zach Gardner and freshman Lee Mara.

Following Kone's fifth goal of the year and Gardner solidifying his sixth straight game with either a goal or an assist, Siena staved off multiple offensive attempts from the future No. 6 seed Red Foxes, with freshman goalkeeper Bennet Glinder registering five saves.

Siena received late insurance from transfer sophomore Anthony Rouse, who recorded his first goal in a Siena uniform following passes from Kone and Hersi in the 83rd minute.

Soon to make its fourth postseason appearance in as many seasons under Brito, the Saints will aim to advance to what would be its first MAAC Championship Game appearance in program history.
