Softball Splits with Marist in Marathon Doubleheader

Saints Take Front Half of Rivalry Twin Bill with Red Foxes

LOUDONVILLE, NY – Extra innings, contentious calls, and a rare weather delay were all part of Siena Softball's latest doubleheader action to continue an eight-game home stand at Siena Softball Field in Loudonville, New York on Saturday. The Saints (25-11, 6-2) took a 5-3 win in 11 innings over MAAC rival Marist (18-21, 6-2) before dropping an 8-5 decision to end the day.

Siena 5, Marist 3 (11)

Siena got on the board immediately in the first meeting between the two rivals in Loudonville since 2018, with graduate student Ava Fitzmaurice putting a ball in play that allowed junior Isabella Pardo to come in and score on a throwing error. Siena's Alissa Eimont duked it out with Marist's Calista Phippen into the middle innings, when the Saints used a multi-home frame in the fourth to extend the lead. Fitzmaurice's 100th hit in a Siena uniform came in the form of a solo shot to left, while freshman Emma Petersen followed suit two batters later to make it 3-0 Saints after four.

Marist finally broke onto the scoreboard in the fifth with a 2 RBI single from Haley Ahr that put them within a run. The visitors left a runner on-base in the fifth and two in the sixth, but tied the game in the seventh off a controversial sacrifice fly that saw a safe call enforced due to catcher's interference on the base path. This caused the game to go into extra innings, with Siena doing so for the second time this season.

Eimont and Phippen continued to deal, with Phippen totaling nine strikeouts over 113 pitches thrown and Eimont doing the same damage with an astounding 165 pitches. Marist stranded a pair in the ninth and the Saints did the same in the tenth to set up a walk-off situation in the 11th. Petersen singled up the middle to set the table for a walk-off two-run bomb from senior Jocelyn Ulrich over the left field fence to end it.

Both teams recorded seven hits, with Ulrich and Petersen recording multi-knock days. Phippen dropped to 10-7 on the year in the loss, while Eimont improved to 7-3 in the complete game victory.

Marist 8, Siena 5

Following a three hour and eight minute affair to open the series, the squads continued to battle into the nightcap, with Marist striking first in the form of an RBI single in the opening frame. Ulrich homered for the second time in three innings to tie the game in the bottom of the second, while Ahr followed suit to put Marist back up in the third. Siena tied the game once again in the fourth off an RBI single from senior Shannon Bonewit that plated pinch runner Emmalynn Skaff, but the Red Foxes put forth a crooked frame in the sixth.

Marist plated three runs in the top of the sixth inning to make way for nine runs over the next three frames, using a pair of RBI singles and a double steal to do so. Siena responded with a three-run frame of its own in the bottom of the sixth, including RBI singles from junior Mikala Fletcher and Fitzmaurice. Marist pulled ahead one final time with a sacrifice fly, sacrifice bunt, and RBI double in the seventh, while stranding a Siena runner on-base in the bottom half of the frame.

Marist held a 12-8 hits advantage, with Ulrich going 3-4 with a pair of runs scored to lead the way. Kiley Myers (6-4) struck out four in the complete game win for the visitors, while redshirt-junior Diana Parker (4-1) took the loss in one third of an inning following six no-decision frames for Fitzmaurice. Sophomore McKenzie Swinson stole her 19th base of the season in the third inning to set the single-season individual record for swipes and tie the team for its most stolen bases in a campaign at 74.

Siena's home weekend action continues with another MAAC doubleheader on Sunday, April 16. The Saints will play host to Quinnipiac for the first time since 2018, with doubleheader action set for Noon and 2 PM on ESPN+.
