Shutout Saints Blank Saint Peter’s to Begin MAAC Play

Siena Softball Opened Home Action with Doubleheader Sweep

LOUDONVILLE, NY – Siena Softball turned in more than just an impressive homecoming performance in its home and MAAC opening doubleheader at Siena Softball Field on Monday afternoon. The Saints (16-8, 2-0) recorded their third and fourth consecutive shutout wins in the form of 3-0 and 5-0 decisions over Saint Peter's (16-9, 0-2) to start 2-0 in league play for the second straight season.

The Green and Gold have now gone 30.1 innings without allowing a run to score since March 22, marking the longest shutout inning streak in program history. The Saints recorded the program's first doubleheader shutout sweep in MAAC play since 2015, and have strung together four straight shutouts for the first time ever.

Siena 3, Saint Peter's 0

Following two scoreless innings to begin a sunny by extremely windy affair in Loudonville, the Saints broke through in the home half of the third, with graduate student Ava Fitzmaurice singling up the middle to score junior Isabella Pardo and senior Angelina Stile driving in graduate student Sabrina Vargas on an RBI single.

Redshirt-freshman Alissa Eimont turned in a gem in the circle to kick things off, beginning by retiring the first ten batters of the game in order for 3.1 perfect innings. The Aberdeen, New Jersey product gave up just two hits and retired six more batters in a row to pave the way for the Saints to extend the lead in the fifth.

Siena gave the game its final score via a ground out in the fifth that allowed Pardo to come around from second and score. Eimont (3-3) struck out four in the complete game victory, while Fitzmaurice's two hits led the way for the team offensively. Sydney Senerchia (7-2) took the loss in the circle for the Peacocks, with three earned runs allowed on six hits, one strikeout, and two walks.

Siena 5, Saint Peter's 0

Siena began a swift end to a lightning quick three-and-a-half-hour doubleheader by putting up a crooked number in the home half of the first to kick off game two. After crossing the plate twice to start the day, Pardo reached first on a throwing error during her first at-bat, advanced to third, and came in to score on another miscue. Fitzmaurice plated Vargas on an RBI single up the middle and then scored on an RBI ground out from Stile to make it 3-0 Saints after one.

Fitzmaurice also dazzled in the circle, allowing just three hits, retiring six of the first seven batters, and striking out seven with no walks. The distinguished defense allowed the Saints to extend the lead in the sixth, with Stile again sending in Fitzmaurice on an RBI single and freshman Emma Petersen roping an RBI triple to right field to plate sophomore Emmalynn Skaff.

Fitzmaurice improved to 5-3 in the circle this season in complete game fashion, while also going a perfect 3-3 with an RBI and two runs scored to steady the team offensively. Sydney Palmer (4-2) came away with the loss for the Peacocks, allowing five runs (four earned) and striking out one.

Siena will remain at home and in conference play on Tuesday, April 4 when it hosts MAAC rival Manhattan in doubleheader action at Noon & 2 PM.
