LOUDONVILLE, NY – Siena Softball concluded a six-game home stand to open season play at Siena Softball Field by battling April showers Thursday evening to continue a busy week of action. The Saints (19-9) took a doubleheader split against Binghamton (15-11), dropping a close 4-3 decision in game one before taking a shortened 4-2 triumph to close the day.
Binghamton 4, Siena 3
Taking the field at home for the third time in four days, the Green and Gold saw their six-game win streak come to a close in their first matchup with the Bearcats since 2012. Siena got on the board in the bottom of the first by way of an RBI single from senior
Angelina Stile that sent home junior
Mikala Fletcher, but Binghamton responded with a solo home run to tie it at one in the top of the second.
The Bearcats used a crooked fourth inning to pull ahead via an RBI double and an RBI single, and chased Siena starting pitcher
Nicole Patille from the game in the process. Siena climbed back into the contest in the latter two innings, with redshirt-junior
Diana Parker safe at home on a double steal in the fifth and freshman
Emma Petersen launching her first collegiate home run over the left field fence in the sixth.
The Saints stranded a pair of Binghamton runners in the top of the seventh, and loaded up the bases with two outs in the bottom of the inning, but could not cash in to tie the game. Binghamton's Allison L'Amoreaux (3-2) took the win with nine strikeouts in 5.1 innings, while Brianna Roberts earned her second save of the season. Patille (2-3) received the loss with one strikeout in three innings, while senior
Allison Speshyock fanned three batters during the latter four innings in the circle. Binghamton held a 7-6 advantage in hits, with Fletcher logging a pair to lead the Saints offensively.
Siena 4, Binghamton 2 (5)
With rain showers popping in and out of the vicinity to begin game two, two-and-a-half scoreless innings led to an RBI single from graduate student
Ava Fitzmaurice that allowed sophomore
McKenzie Swinson to score in the home half of the third. Binghamton responded with an RBI single of its own in the top of the fourth, but Fitzmaurice struck again in the home half of the frame with another RBI knock to plate graduate student
Sabrina Vargas and give Siena a 2-1 lead.
Siena further extended the lead in the fourth by way of a 2 RBI single from Stile that sent in both Fitzmaurice and Swinson. Binghamton managed an RBI double in the top of the fifth, but stranded a pair of baserunners. Following the top of the fifth, the umpires called the game with Siena leading at 6:53 PM after deeming field conditions to be unplayable. This marked the first weather-shortened Siena home game since April 2, 2019.
Siena took the win despite Binghamton again owning a 7-6 hits advantage, with Fitzmaurice's pair of hits leading the way offensively. The Greenville, New York native also took the complete game victory in the circle with four strikeouts to improve to 8-3 this season. Sophia Pappas (1-4) took the loss during the final two innings for the Bearcats.
The Saints will conclude an eight-game week with a pivotal MAAC road doubleheader on Saturday, April 8. Siena will battle defending MAAC champion Canisius in a rematch of last year's MAAC championship game in Buffalo, New York, with first pitch set for 2 & 4:30 PM.
