LOUDONVILLE, NY – Syracuse scored twice in less than a four-minute span late in the first half to surge past Siena Women's Soccer 3-0 Sunday afternoon at Siena Field. The match marked just the Saints' second-ever home contest vs. a Power Five foe, and first in 27 years.
Erin Flurey scored and added an assist for Syracuse (1-1), which held a 17-10 advantage in shots and a 7-4 margin in corners. Shea Vanderbosch, twin sister of Siena (0-2) starting center back
Kam Vanderbosch, made four saves in goal to post the clean sheet for the Orange. The sisters went head-to-head directly in the 85
th minute, when a blistering free kick from 30 yards out from Kam was saved by Shea.
Following a scoreless opening 35 minutes, Syracuse headed into halftime with momentum thanks to a pair of late strikes. Alyssa Abramson opened the scoring in the 36
th minute, with Flurey adding an insurance tally just 3:54 later to give the Orange a commanding 2-0 lead at the break.
The Saints pressured to rally in the second half, putting all four of their shots on target in the stanza. But Siena couldn't capitalize and Hannah Pilley tacked on an insurance goal for Syracuse in the 75
th minute as the Saints suffered identical back-to-back 3-0 home losses to top-tier opponents to open the season.
Angela Fini made seven saves for Siena which fell to 0-7-0 all-time vs. Power Five opponents while being outscored by a combined 20-0 margin. The Saints' only previous home match vs. a Power Five was a 2-0 loss to Big Ten foe Penn State on Oct. 2, 1996 in Loudonville.
Siena returns to action next week with a two-match southern swing to Kentucky and Tennessee. The Saints make the program's first-ever appearance in the Bluegrass State when they take on first-time opponent Western Kentucky on Thursday at 8 p.m. ET (7 p.m. CT) in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
