LOUDONVILLE, NY – Firing on all cylinders, Siena Volleyball earned its 700
th victory in program history in its home and conference opener over Saint Peter's 3-0 (25-14, 25-16, 25-15) on Wednesday night at the UHY Center.
Siena (1-9, 1-0 MAAC) got the start it had been seeking and never let go as
Anny Montano produced a monster performance with 14 kills on a .522 hitting percentage to go along with 14 digs and five aces.
The Saints hit season-high marks in several categories including kills (43), hitting percentage (.319), assists (42) and tied their season-best in digs with 43.
Siena began strong. In the first set, the Green and Gold reeled off seven consecutive points to take a commanding 15-5 lead behind the serving of freshman
Payton Hinkle and two kills from Montano.
In the second set, Siena picked up where they left off with another fast start—jumping out a 6-1 advantage with Montano behind the service line. The redshirt junior from Cali, Colombia connected for three aces during the run.
The Peacocks (0-11, 0-1 MAAC) closed the gap to within 14-13 on a Mackenzie Tucker kill. However, Siena answered back with seven straight points on the strength of the serving from
Sara Wagner, who had two aces in the spurt. Montano finished with five aces for the match—including four in the second set and the point clincher.
Wagner tied a season-high with 13 kills on a .280 hitting percentage and added five digs.
The Peacocks were able to keep it closer in the early stages of the third set, trailing 8-6 after a Wagner attack error.
Siena took eight of the next 11 points, mostly with Montano and Hinkle holding serve. Montano had kills in four of the next five points and Wagner delivered on a pair of kills of her own to make it 16-9. Siena closed with authority by winning six of the final seven points, capped by a Montano kill.
Passing duties were nearly split with
Meghan Johnsson and
Oliwia Majtyka, picking up 17 and 16 assists, respectively.
Hinkle was second on the team in digs with a season-best 11.
The Brownsburg, IN native added six assists.
Next up, Siena will have a quick turnaround with a conference match at Marist on Friday at 6 p.m.
