For everything that the Siena Volleyball team had working in the initial stages of its Capital Region Showdown with UAlbany, it went away just as quickly as the Saints faded in a 3-0 loss (17-22, 10-25, 10-25) on Wednesday night to the Great Danes at Robinson Gym on Russell Sage College's Kahl Campus.
Siena (1-11) got off to the start that they were seeking as it reeled off six consecutive points to take a 6-3 advantage in the early moments of the first set.
With redshirt junior outside hitter
Anny Montano behind the service line, Siena worked in unison with
Monet Latunde and
Olga Sawinska each putting down two kills from freshman setter
Oliwia Majtyka. Montano would rifle an ace during the span while Sawinska and
Sara Wagner jumped together to collect a block.
However, after the teams were tied at 9-9, the Great Danes (4-9) came back with a 7-0 run of their own to take a lead that they would not relinquish behind kills from Tori Wilson, Kyrah Wilbur and Elisavet Papageorgiou.
Siena would only get as close as to within four points of the lead in the opening set.
In the second set, Siena trailed 11-8 before UAlbany went on an 8-0 run to take command.
The Saints ran into trouble with 13 attack errors in the set.
UAlbany jumped out a 6-1 lead in the third set and held the lead throughout.
Montano led the Saints with six kills and five digs, Majtyka had 10 assists and Hinkle contributed a team-best 15 digs.
Next up, Siena will return home at the UHY Center to host Fairfield this Saturday at 2 p.m. in a MAAC game.
