LOUDONVILLE, NY – It's been home sweet home for Siena Women's Basketball over the last three weeks. After enduring a stretch of four of five games away from home and going 1-4 over that time, the Green and Gold completed four straight home wins during a stretch of four of five games inside the UHY Center. The Saints' (8-8, 5-3) latest home feat came on Alumni Day over defending MAAC champion Iona (7-9, 2-5) in the form of a 77-56 beatdown on Saturday afternoon.
After beginning the week at home with a big win over Rider, the Green and Gold capped back-to-back 21-win wins with their third straight game crossing the 70-point threshold. The team moved into a split for third place in the MAAC standings, and are now one win away from three straight Januarys of at least five wins under head coach
Jim Jabir. Coach Jabir is now 33-17 all-time in the month of January at Siena, and has recorded at least five wins in each of his first five seasons over two different stints in Loudonville.
Looking to avenge being swept in the regular season and seeing their 2022-23 campaign end at the hands of the Gaels, Siena was forced to battle it out during the opening quarter of action, with both teams struggling to pull away. Sophomore
Elisa Mevius ended things on a high note for the home team by connecting on a wide-open right-side baseline three to end the period and give Siena a 15-13 advantage.
The triple to end the opening period propelled the Green and Gold to an 11-2 run to begin the second quarter, leading by as many as eight points and bringing a six-point lead into the half at 33-27. The advantage paved the way for the team's third straight 40-point second half.
After having a last-second layup waved off to end the first half, senior
Ahynisha Jackson nailed down a three to begin the third period in her return to the floor after missing Thursday's game due to illness. After Iona briefly brought the game back to a six-point difference, Siena embarked on an 11-3 run fueled by five points from freshman
Ciany Conyers to bring the lead out to 14 with two minutes remaining in the third quarter.
After ending the third period with a pair of free throws, sophomore
Teresa Seppala turned on the jets in the final ten minutes with Siena's first seven points of the quarter and added a late three to lead the team to a 44-29 second half advantage. The Tempere, Finland native finished as the game's leading scorer with 20 points and her second 20-point output of the season, while adding six rebounds and going a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line.
After turning in only one double-double during the first 13 games of the season, junior
Anajah Brown has done so in each of the last three games, this time going for 19 points and ten boards, including 9-16 from the field. Conyers went for a career-best 13 points including 3-4 from long range, while sophomore
London Gamble finished in double-figures for the second straight game with ten points.
Siena shot a season-best 49.2 percent from the field while holding an opponent under 60 for the second straight game and forcing 24 Iona turnovers for its eight game with at least 20 turnovers forced this year. Iona's Natalia Otkhmezuri led the way for the visitors with 15 points, while Judith Gomez added ten points.
The Saints' road ahead includes three of the next four games away from home, beginning with a showdown at Quinnipiac on Saturday, January 27 at 4 PM in Hamden, Connecticut.
