Wagner notches 1,000 kills; Volleyball rolls past Manhattan

Adeele Hollas smashes 16 kills; Wagner becomes 10th member of 1,000 club

LOUDONVILLE, NY – On a momentous day for senior Sara Wagner, the rest of her teammates provided plenty of backup to lift the Siena Volleyball team to a second consecutive conference victory with a 3-1 victory over visiting Manhattan at the UHY Center on Saturday afternoon.

Needing just one more kill, Wagner secured her 1,000th career kill early in the first set and finished with nine kills in all as the Saints beat the Jaspers 25-18, 25-23, 21-25, 25-17 to up its MAAC record to 2-2 on the season.

Siena (3-12 overall) hit a season-high .261 as a team and improved to 3-1 in matches this season when the team collectively hits .200 or better.

Redshirt freshman Salme Adeele Hollas produced another monster game, stacking up a team-high 16 kills on a robust .389 hitting percentage and contributed nine digs as well on the defensive side of the ball.

Senior setter Claire Isaksen put up a season-best 24 assists and senior libero Grace Wilhelm was extremely active on the back lines, picking up a team-high 21 digs to lead the team.

Siena took command immediately, racing out a 7-0 advantage with Isaksen serving behind the line, prompting an early timeout by Manhattan.  Siena expanded the lead to 18-9 after a Doga Diraz kill fed by Alandra Hasbrouck.  A kill from Wagner wrapped up the first set.

Manhattan (1-13 overall, 0-4 MAAC) went ahead 9-5 in the second set with some solid serving from Fiona Van Dyke.  Wagner and Hollas put down kills as part of a 4-0 spurt to put Siena back ahead 23-22.  Two more kills from Hollas on passes from Isaksen put away the set.

The Jaspers got back into the match by taking the third set with strong net play from Mikayla Curran, Van Dyke and Chloe Anderson.

Siena played out to a small lead in the fourth set and then reeled off five straight in a critical stretch to carry a 21-14 edge.  Olga Sawinska had two key kills in the stretch and Sina Toroslu put the game away with a kill.

Siena has a quick turnaround, playing MAAC foe Iona at 2 p.m. on Sunday.  It will be Sunglasses Sunday with fans receiving free Siena sunglasses as supplies last. The match will also be broadcast on ESPN+ and can be watched here through the app with those who have a subscription.
