Volleyball Stymied by Rider

Saints drop to 4-9 in MAAC play

LOUDONVILLE, NY – Siena Volleyball got off to a sluggish start and was unable to rally back as the Saints dropped a conference match to visiting Rider 3-0 (11-25, 23-25, 15-25) on Saturday afternoon at the UHY Center.

Siena (5-20, 4-9 MAAC) trailed 12-1 in the opening set as the Saints had difficulty in generating a defense against the serving of Ryley Frye and Carly Zimmet.

Frye started the first six service points and picked up a pair of aces and it was quickly followed by six more points with Zimmett behind the line. Kiannisha Santiago, Rylah Robinson and Molly Rohde all contributed with kills during the spurt for the Broncs (11-15, 10-3 MAAC).

Siena responded with a 4-0 mini-spurt punctuated by two kills from Sonja Meyer and one each from Sara Wagner and Sina Toroslu to cut the lead to 15-7, but that's as close as Siena would come in the first set as Santiago closed the set with three of Rider's last four kills.

The Green and Gold played their best set statistically in the second when it outhit the Broncs .243 to .209 and was able to tie it at 21-all on an ace off the hand of Alandra Hasbrouck

Rider's Brynn Johnson and Siena's Salme Adeele Hollas exchanged kills before a finishing spike by Robinson closed it.

It marked the 26th set this season in which Siena had dropped a set by four points or fewer.

Siena took a 3-0 led to start the third set with kills by Doga Diraz and Wagner, but the Broncs took the lead back for good with a 5-4 advantage.

Siena got three straight points from Diraz and a couple of Rider errors to pull within 11-10.

But Rider took six of the next seven points and then closed with the final five points to win it.

Oliwia Majtyka led the Saints with 15 assists and Hasbrouck contributed with 11 assists.

Hasbrouck surpassed 1,000 career assists split between her two seasons at Saint Rose and first season with Siena.  Hasbrouck ranks second on the team in the category with 249 assists (3.83 assists per set).

Playing in the libero position, Hannah Bowman set a career-high for digs with 13.

Hollas had 10 kills on a .375 hitting percentage and seven digs.

The Saints will take on Saint Peter's (5-15, 3-10 MAAC) on Sunday at 2 p.m. from the UHY Center in a conference match up.
