LOUDONVILLE, NY - Despite a career-high 31 points by junior
Teresa Seppala, the visiting Cornell Big Red (4-9) overcame a six-point fourth quarter deficit to top Siena Women's Basketball (5-6, 2-0 MAAC), 76-73, from the UHY Center on Monday evening.
Seppala shot 12-18 from the field, 4-7 from deep, and 3-3 from the free throw line while her season-high 10 rebounds helped produce her first double-double of the year.
Anajah Brown added 16 points and a season-high three steals, while
Eszter Turi had a career-high nine points as well.
KB Hadley dished out a career high eight assists to help give Siena its single-game most this season (16). Brown added four for a career high as well.
Cornell attempted 24 free throws in the win, 14 of which coming from Summer Parker-Hall - who drained 13 as part of 21 points. Emily Pape scored 26 points to lead the Big Red.
Siena jumped out to a 17-7 lead late in the first quarter thanks to six
Zoe Richardson points and five by Seppala, while the team went 7-8 from the field. However, the Big Red closed out the final two minutes on an 8-0 run to make it a two-point game entering the second.
The sides traded blows early in the quarter, with Cornell holding the upper hand with a slight five-point edge midway through. The Saints battled back to eventually take a late lead with under six seconds to play, however, Emily Pape knocked down a deep three at the horn to give Cornell a 43-41 lead at the break.
Through the first half, Seppala (11) and Brown (10) led the team in scoring, while Pape had a game-high 18. Hadley also had a career high seven assists through the first 20 minutes.
Siena came out hot in the third quarter, going on a 9-2 run over a 2:53 span. Seppala (five), and Brown (four) combined for all nine during the stretch that put the team back up by five. In fact, Seppala and Brown accounted for 17 of the Saints' 18 points in the quarter, while the defense held the Big Red to 10, taking a 59-53 lead into the fourth.
Cornell chipped away over the first five minutes of the half to come within two points of Siena, 65-63, at the 4:51 mark. The Big Red went on to capitalize on key Siena turnovers during the ensuing three minutes to eventually lead 73-70 with 1:24 to play.
After Cornell extended its lead to 76-70 from the free throw line, Seppala came down and drilled a pull-up three pointer with 18 seconds to go to bring it within three. The Saints defense forced a jump ball on the ensuing stand, giving the team possession with 15 seconds remaining. However, Siena was unable to get a shot off at the end of the game, and Cornell hung on for the fourth quarter comeback win.
Siena travels to Riverdale, NY to take on Manhattan Thursday night. Tip-off from Draddy Gymnasium is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
