Saints Play for a Big Cause, Win Even Bigger

Siena Women’s Basketball Collects Largest Win of 2023-24 Season on Pink Zone Night

LOUDONVILLE, NY – Surrounded by pink, Siena Women's Basketball was in the zone on Thursday evening at the UHY Center. Playing in front of a crowd of over 700 on its 23rd annual Pink Zone night, the Saints (10-8, 7-3) completed their largest win of the season thus far in a 74-51 rout of Manhattan (14-5, 7-3) while raising over $2,000 for The Donna Foundation towards breast cancer research and awareness.

The Green and Gold capped their fourth straight win overall, their sixth in the last seven games, and their fifth straight at home, while ending the Jaspers' five-game win streak in the process. Siena's 7-3 conference mark gives it consecutive seasons of starting that well in MAAC play for the first time since the 2001-02 and 2002-03 campaigns.

Furthermore and possibly most impressive, the team locked up its first four-game streak of wins by 18 or more points in 32 years – since the 1990-91 season. Only four times prior has the program accomplished such a feat in 50 years.

Playing in its only home contest over a two-week span and in search of a season split with its in-state league rivals, the Saints battled to a stalemate at 12 in the game's opening minutes before embarking on an 8-2 to close out the first quarter. The Jaspers got their first six points of the game from junior Jade Blagrove, but were held off the board for nearly four minutes in the first half, and never reclaimed the lead.

Three-pointers from freshman Ciany Conyers and senior Ahniysha Jackson propelled the home team to an 11-0 run down the stretch in the second quarter, allowing them to take an 11-point halftime lead into the locker room. Siena would go on to improve to 9-0 this season when leading at the half.

A 9-3 Manhattan run early in the third quarter prompted a pair of early Siena timeouts with its lead temporarily cut to just five, but the Saints would net 12 of the final 17 points of the period, which was capped by another Jackson triple, to lead by 14 entering the fourth quarter.

On a night where a season-best nine different Saints scored, the Green and Gold once again saved their best for last, outscoring the Jaspers, 22-13, in the final quarter and securing its fifth straight second half with 40 or more points. Going over 70 points for the fifth straight game for the first time since the 2001-02 season, Siena was led by 15 points each from Jackson and sophomore Elisa Mevius, who added four assists, three rebounds, and two steals. Conyers and sophomore Teresa Seppala added ten points each, while junior Anajah Brown finished a rebound away from her career-high with 13, and freshman Eszter Turi went for a career-high ten boards.

Siena held a 40-30 rebound advantage over the second-best team in the league on the boards and scored 19 points off 16 turnovers while getting 19 points off the bench and shooting 48.2 percent from the field. The team's 23-point win is its largest since a 28-point triumph at Marist on February 18, 2023.

The Saints will next hit the road south to Poughkeepsie to face off against the Red Foxes for the first time this season. Tip off is set for 7 PM on Saturday, February 3 at McCann Arena, with Siena in search of its first 8-3 start to league play since the 2015-16 campaign.
