Saints Complete First-Ever Sweep of Quinnipiac for Seventh Straight Win

Siena Women’s Basketball off to Best MAAC Start in 21 Seasons

LOUDONVILLE. NY – Taking the court at the UHY Center for its only home game over a three-week span, Siena Women's Basketball continued to roll and clinched its second season sweep over an opponent thus far this year. The Saints (13-8, 10-3) rolled over Quinnipiac, 74-55, in front of a crowd of 965 to secure its first-ever home win and series sweep over the Bobcats Saturday afternoon.

The win gave the Green and Gold seven straight victories for the first time since the 2002-03 season, as well as its first 10-3 start to MAAC play since that year – which marked the program's most recent appearance in the MAAC championship game. The team has now gone over 70 points in a game in eight straight outings, which is tied for the third-longest such streak in program history and the first such occurrence since the 1998-99 campaign.

Following a definitive 78-60 win in Hamden over the Bobcats two weeks ago, Siena hopped out to an early 11-2 lead off the strength of seven points from sophomore London Gamble and led 21-20 after the first quarter of play. Reigning MAAC Player and Rookie of the Week Anna Foley recorded eight first half points for the visitors, but it did not stop the Saints from holding a 38-20 lead at the half.

After being held to the least amount of points Siena has held an opponent to in a half this season, the Bobcats embarked on a 7-0 run to cut the Siena lead to 11 with 5:20 remaining in the third. Following a media timeout, the Saints closed out the third quarter on a monstrous 16-2 run, which included the final nine points of the period from senior Ahniysha Jackson, who ended third with back-to-back threes.

After netting nine points in the second quarter alone, freshman Alden Yergey used the fourth quarter of play to end a streak of 13 straight games in single-digit scoring, finishing with a career-high 13 points off 5-9 shooting from the floor. Nine different Saints found the scoring column in the game, with Jackson finishing with 11, Gamble, sophomore Elisa Mevius, and freshman Ciany Conyers going for nine apiece, and sophomore Teresa Seppala adding nine rebounds. Mevius also added five assists and four steals, moving into fourth place all-time in single-season history in the latter.

Siena shot a smooth 48.4 percent from the field to go over 40 percent for the tenth straight contest, while holding the Bobcats to 37.7 percent from the floor and just 4-20 from long range. Quinnipiac held a 35-32 rebound advantage, but the Saints netted 29 points off 21 turnovers, scored 34 points in the paint, and recorded a staggering 33 bench points in the win.

Currently in a stretch of facing four straight games against the top-six teams in the MAAC by record, the Green and Gold are set to head west to the Buffalo area to face Niagara and Canisius next week. Siena will aim for a series sweep over the Purple Eagles on Thursday, February 15 at 6 PM in Niagara University, New York.
