JERSEY CITY, NJ – Despite being just west of the nation's greatest city, Siena Women's Basketball found itself back in the New York groove on Saturday afternoon. The Saints (14-11, 11-6) ended a three-game losing skid with a 75-57 win at Saint Peter's (6-20, 3-14) at Run Baby Run Arena in Jersey City, New Jersey to complete its third regular season sweep over a conference opponent this season.
After forcing a season and league-high 35 turnovers in a 64-45 win over the Peacocks back on January 6, the Green and Gold once again used turnovers to surge to victory, forcing 32 Peacock miscues by way of a season-best 22 steals that led to 31 points off turnovers.
After letting up six of the first eight points of the game, Siena went on an 8-0 run which included an early three from senior
Ahniysha Jackson, who recorded a season-high 31 points in the first meeting. Saint Peter's battled back for the lead, but two more Jackson three's in the first period gave the Saints a two-point lead after ten minutes.
Working off the strength of 17 first half points from sophomore Jada Leonard, the home team continued to battle, while the Saints heated up from beyond-the-arc. Redshirt-freshman
Nikola Zdenkova used a pair of triples to lead the visitors to a 10-2 run during the first four minutes of the second quarter, while Jackson hit two more in the final two-and-a-half minutes to allow Siena a six-point halftime advantage.
After Saint Peter's Reilly Sunday hit a three to bring the deficit to three early in the third quarter, sophomore
Teresa Seppala took over for the Saints with the team's next 11 points to push the lead out to 12. Siena netted 17 of the final 24 points scored of the period to hold a 15-point lead after three. The Saints ran the lead as high as 23 in the final period and finished the game with eight different scorers in total. Despite being out-shot and out-rebounded, the Saints went for a respectable 45.5 percent from the field and also logged 17 team assists.
Jackson and Seppala each chipped in 19 points and combined for seven of the team's ten three pointers, while sophomore
Elisa Mevius neared triple-double territory with 15 points, ten rebounds, eight assists, and seven steals. Having already set the program's single season record in steals, Mevius moved into a tie for fourth all-time in MAAC single-season history with 111 swipes on the year, and also moved into 24
th all-time on the program's career assist list.
Leonard led Saint Peter's – who shot 52 vPercent from the field despite taking the loss – with 24 points, while Carys Roy added ten points and Fatamah Janneh added ten boards.
Siena will conclude the 2023-24 regular season with two of its final three games at home, beginning on Thursday, February 29 against Marist. The Saints will hold Irish Night as a fundraiser for its upcoming foreign tour of Ireland this summer.
