FAIRFIELD, CT – Competing for the second time in midweek action this week, Siena Softball battled regional foe Sacred Heart for the second time this year in another close battle. The Pioneers (9-14) edged out the Saints (12-7), 3-2, to secure a split of the season series.
Following a 2-1 extra-inning victory for Siena in Madeira Beach, Florida back on March 8, the Saints fell into an early two-run deficit in the bottom of the first following a Sacred Heart RBI single and RBI double. Siena responded with junior
Madi Silber scoring twice: first on a passed ball in the top of the third, and then on a sacrifice fly from sophomore
Emma Petersen in the fifth.
The Green and Gold continued to move things along defensively, but stranded the bases loaded offensively in the sixth and led the potential go-ahead run at second in the top of the seventh. Sacred Hear placed on the go-ahead run on first via a throwing error and won the game on an RBI double two batters later.
Siena dropped just its second contest in the last three weeks despite out-hitting the Pioneers, 7-6, with Silber, senior
Isabella Pardo, and freshman
Chloe Cummings each recording a pair of knocks. Graduate student
Nicole Patille struck out four in a five-inning no decision, while redshirt-sophomore
Alissa Eimont (7-3) took the loss with one strikeout in the final one-and-one-third innings.
Siena will continue non-conference action with a doubleheader at Delaware State on Tuesday, March 26.
