LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – If there was ever a way to build momentum heading into the postseason, Siena Women's Basketball found it Thursday evening in New Jersey. The Saints (17-11, 14-6) commenced a rout of Rider (9-19, 6-13) to the tune of a 77-40 victory at Alumni Gymnasium to end the regular season on a four-game winning streak.
The win signified the largest of the season for the Green and Gold, who led by as many as 36 points and dropped 48 points in the first half. Siena's exit to its 50
th regular season of play was highlighted by two major milestones accomplished by sophomore
Elisa Mevius, who set the MAAC single-season record for steals in the first half, and completed the program's first-ever triple-double in the second half.
The Rendsburg, Germany native – who continues to rank second nationally in both total steals and steals per-game – recorded four swipes to pass Loyola's Katie Sheahin for the record, finishing the night with 121 steals on the season. Mevius finished the game with 16 points, a career-high 16 rebounds, and ten assists for the program's first triple-double and the first of the season by a MAAC player.
En-route to securing its sixth regular season sweep over a conference opponent for just the eighth time in program history and the first time since the 2003-04 campaign, Siena ran away with the game early, putting together a 13-0 run midway through the first quarter thanks to back-to-back threes from senior
Ahniysha Jackson, and ending the period with a left-side baseline triple from freshman
Alden Yergey at the buzzer.
The offensive explosion continued with the visitors outscoring the Broncs, 25-9, in the second quarter, with Siena recording the first 15 points of the period to cap its longest run of the season to-date of 20 straight points over a seven-minute period. Siena ended the half with Mevius having already recorded a double-double, holding its largest lead of the season, and limiting Rider to the fewest points in a half allowed this season (19).
After establishing themselves in the first half, the Green and Gold endured a stretch of eight minutes and ten seconds without scoring in the third quarter, with the teams combining for just 13 total points in ten minutes and the Broncs being held to only four for Siena's least amount of point allowed in a quarter this year. Siena continued to roll to close things out, with eight different scorers getting on the board and the team finishing with double-double three-pointers made for the third time in the last four games.
Mevius' sixth double-double this season included double-digit rebounds for the fifth time and double-digit assists for the second, with Siena going a second straight game with a player recording exactly 16 boards. Jackson led all scorers with 18 points off the strength of four triples, while sophomore
Teresa Seppala added 14 points – including the three that completed Mevius' triple-double – and Yergey went for 12 points. Siena tied its season-high in field goal makes at 31 off a season-best 75 attempts, and held an opponent for 40 points or less for the first time since January 2020.
Rider's Jessika Schiffer led the home team with 12 points, while Molly Lynch added eight points and nine rebounds.
Capping back-to-back winning seasons for the first time in 20 years with an exclamation point, Siena will have a week away from competition before beginning the 2024 MAAC Women's Basketball Championships in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The Saints will begin play as the No. 3 seed against the winner of the No. 6 and No. 11 seeds on Thursday, March 14 at 1 PM inside Jim Whalen Boardwalk hall.
