MADEIRA BEACH, FL – Many sporting events come down to the last moment; the last bucket; the last pitch. Siena Softball once again proved durability and resiliency to begin its second weekend of action at The Spring Games in Madeira Beach, Florida on Friday. The Saints (9-5) took 2-1 extra-inning wins over regional foes Stonehill and Sacred Heart to improve to 4-0 in extra innings this season.
Siena 2, Stonehill 1 (8)
In the first-ever meeting between Siena and the Skyhawks, Stonehill got on the board on an RBI fielder's choice in the first inning. The teams then entered a defensive battle, with redshirt-sophomore
Alissa Eimont leading the way in the circle for the designated home team to strand three runners on-base through the fifth.
Siena then struck in the top of the sixth with freshman
Chloe Cummings roping a one out triple down the right field line and then coming home to score on an RBI fly out from redshirt-senior
Diana Parker. The Saints then stranded a pair of Stonehill runners defensively and one more in the seventh to earn a chance to walk off in the seventh, but stranded a pair themselves in the bottom half of the frame.
With both teams placing a runner on second to begin extra innings, Stonehill had their runner 60 feet from home but could not score, while former manager
Mckenzie Faherty started on second for the Seconds and came in to score with one out on an RBI single up the middle from senior
Isabella Pardo.
Both teams recorded seven hits in the duel, with Cummings leading the way with a pair of knocks. Eimont improved to 5-1 on the year with four strikeouts in the complete-game victory, while Stonehill's Skylar Brandemarte (1-2) took the loss in the final inning-and-a-third.
Siena 2, Sacred Heart 1 (8)
The Saints then entered into a similar situation with longtime rival Sacred Heart, with the teams going scoreless through five-and-a-half innings. It was graduate student pitcher
Nicole Patille who led the way defensively this time around, helping the Saints to stand a couple of early threatening Pioneer runners.
Looking to avenge an early-morning loss to Manhattan, Sacred Heart struck in the bottom of the sixth off a bases-loaded RBI fielder's choice, but the Saints still stranded a pair of runners to stop the bleeding. The defensive stop paved the way for the tying run in the seventh off an RBI single from junior
Ashley Giampolo that sent in senior
Mikala Fletcher from second.
After turning a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the seventh, the Green and Golf went back to work in the top of the eighth, using what turned out to be an RBI bunt single from fifth year
Jocelyn Ulrich to plate tiebreaker runner
Mary Mikalsen to go ahead. Sacred Heart had runners on the corners with no one out in the home half of the inning, but Siena stopped the potential tying run at home and retired the next two batters in order to secure the win.
Again both tied in hits with six apiece, with freshman
Carlie Venables recording multiple hits, while Patille improved to 3-0 on the year with six strikeouts in the complete game victory. Sacred Heart's Emily Heath dropped to 1-4 on the year with three K's in a complete game loss.
Siena will be back in action at The Spring Games on Saturday, March 9 to face LIU at 10 AM and Bucknell at 12:30 PM.
