LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – Following a doubleheader shutout sweep on Saturday to begin a weekend series, Siena Softball struggled in the finale against a conference rival. The Saints (21-12, 7-4) dropped a 3-1 decision to Rider at Herb & Joan Young Field in Lawrenceville, New Jersey on Sunday afternoon.
The Green and Gold initially struggled to get going offensively after cruising to 6-0 and 8-0 wins to open the weekend. Rider struck first this time, using three RBI singles in the second inning to jet out to a 3-0 lead. Siena stranded seven runners on-base defensively during the game, and could not begin a comeback attempt until the seventh inning.
The visitors finally got on the board in the seventh, beginning with a leadoff double from sophomore
Emma Petersen that allowed pinch runner
Mikala Fletcher to score on an RBI single from fifth year
Jocelyn Ulrich. Siena had the bases loaded with one out, but could not cash in any further to allow the Broncs to steal the finale.
Both teams managed seven hits in the affair, with Petersen and Ulrich each logging multi-hit days. Freshman
Chloe Cummings took the loss with three runs allowed in one inning, while classmate
Hailey Francois struck out one in five shutout relief innings in the circle.
Siena returns home to begin the next week of action, taking on Holy Cross in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday, April 16 at 2 PM in Loudonville.
