The postseason journey for Siena Women's Tennis ended in the MAAC Tournament Semifinal Round against No. 1 seeded Fairfield in a 4-2 defeat at Mercer County Tennis Park in West Windsor, NJ on Saturday.
The Saints (5-12) used a late season rally in which they had to win three consecutive MAAC matches in a six-day span to qualify for an eighth consecutive season.
Siena was picked up by a pair of its All-MAAC performers.
All-MAAC First Team selection
Laia Giralt won her No. 2 singles match against Katarina Plumtree 6-2, 6-3 and All-MAAC Second Team selection
Emma Boggiali breezed to a 6-1 first set win before gutting out a 7-5 battle in the second set over the Stags' Francesca Karman to earn another victory for the Saints.
Two other singles matches were extended deep in the longer matches including
Manuela Gomez at the #3 singles position as well as
Jade Gautier at the singles No. 6 spot, but each dropped a pair of tough sets by the score of 6-4 and eventually fell to Nicolette Loeffler and Maeve Cassidy. Freshman
Zaara Omar dropped her match to Fairfield's Lily Malinowski.
Saints No. 1 player
Alexa Wilson and the Stags' Sarah Liu left the match unfinished as the match had been decided with a "first to four wins" stipulation.
"Our women played tough today and this match was decided by a few points," coach Chiaramonte said.
"I am so proud of this team and everything they have accomplished this year. Shelby, Emma, Jade and Alexa have all made valuable contributions and we will miss them next year."
Fairfield won two doubles matches just as it had the last time out to earn the doubles point with scores of 7-5 and 6-3.
Fairfield and Siena have met in the MAAC Women's Tennis Tournament eight times including four consecutive seasons with the Stags now leading the playoff all-time series 5-3 in head-to-head matchups.
Fairfield improved to 11-8 overall and will take on No. 2 Quinnipiac on Sunday at 10 a.m. to decide the championship.
