Siena Rugby Programs Compete at National Collegiate Rugby 7's Championship

Both Saints Programs Made First-Ever 7's National Appearances

Siena took to the field in the men's premier 32-team bracket against Notre Dame University Friday morning in the first matchup of the 2024 7's rugby championship. Siena scored 5 tries (Ben Burridge, Luca Holloway(2), Rory Wood, Connor Watkins) to beat Notre Dame, 31-5.

Up next was a tough challenge against Babson College on the stadium field, Siena Scored three tries (Sennen Grove (2), Luca Holloway) but fell short 17-19 in what was a very tight game. Siena were very unlucky not to be awarded a penalty try late on in the game which would have tied things up and taken the game to extra time.

As a result of the Babson score, Siena dropped down from the cup to the Plate competition where they met Notre Dame College. After a heavy defeat to NDC in the fall, Siena was looking to bounce back, however it wasn't to be, with the only score in the game coming from Rory Wood in a 36-7 loss.

Saturday's first game against Marian went all the way to extra time after finishing 0-0 after 14 minutes. One try by Marian was enough to clinch the victory finishing 5-0. After a tough weekend and several injuries, Siena finished up against American International College with only 8 players available out of the possible 15 registered. AIC finished off the tournament with a 38-0 victory.

Luca Holloway finished the tournament as Siena's top points scorer with three tries and 4 conversions.

Siena women competed in the Small College Cup final 16 championship Saturday and Sunday. Siena started their first ever 7's championship with a 17-12 victory after a late score from Bella Angelo. This was Bella's second try of the game, the third try was scored by Emma Walley. This victory secured Siena's spot in the top 8 in the country.

Next up was again a team Siena had faced in the fall and one of the championship favorites, Colby College. Colby showed their power with a convincing 47-0 victory.

This loss saw Siena drop into the Plate competition. The next opponents Siena would face were 2022 and 2023 National champions, Endicott. This fixture took a real team effort from Siena, shown in the scores coming from across the side (Bella Angelo, Gabi Jimenez and Emma Walley) and ultimately a tournament upset with Siena winning 17-14. This victory meant Siena would play on the Sunday for 5th place against East Stroudsburg

Victory wasn't to be. After a tough weekend, Siena fell to East Stroudsburg 22-0. Finishing 6th in the nation is a huge achievement for a team who would not have believed it possible at the beginning of the school year.

top point scorer for the women was Bella Angelo with three tries and two conversions.
