FAIRFIELD, CT – Last-minute weather-related schedule changes did not stop Siena Softball from continuing to roll as it continued MAAC play on Saturday afternoon. The Saints (18-8, 4-0) won their fifth straight ballgame with a 6-4 victory over Fairfield (5-22, 2-5) at Alumni Softball Field in Fairfield, Connecticut.
The Green and Gold got up early as the designated home team after inclement weather forced the series to be moved from Loudonville to Fairfield. The Saints countered a Fairfield RBI single in the first with a sacrifice fly from junior
Ashley Giampolo that scored classmate
McKenzie Swinson in the home frame.
After tossing a pair of strikeouts in the first inning to become the eighth pitcher in program history to eclipse 200 career K's, graduate student
Nicole Patille led the way through the top of the second for the Saints' offense to take over. Seniors
Mikala Fletcher and
Isabella Pardo registered back-to-back RBI singles with the bases loaded, while fifth year
Jocelyn Ulrich added an RBI single to complete a crooked, five-run inning in the bottom of the second and give Siena a 6-1 lead.
Patille fanned four more batters to keep Fairfield off the board until the sixth inning, when the Stags paired a single with a double to come within three. Fairfield would get one more back on a fielder's choice in the seventh, but redshirt-sophomore
Alissa Eimont registered the save in one and one-third innings to secure the win.
Siena recorded its second straight 4-0 MAAC start despite being out-hit, 8-7, with Pardo and Fletcher's multi-RBI outings leading the way along with multi-hit days from Swinson and Ulrich. Patille improved to a perfect 7-0 on the year with six strikeouts in five and two-thirds innings.
Siena and Fairfield will conclude weekend action with a doubleheader on Sunday, April 7 beginning at 12:30 PM.
