Siena Volleyball redeemed themselves in the nightcap of the Skyhawk Invitational twin bill by earning a 3-0 sweep over host Stonehill 25-19, 25-20, 25-20 to pick up its first win of the 2024 season on Saturday at Merkert Gymnasium.
It was Siena's first win in August since August 26, 2016 when it defeated Saint Francis (NY) in five sets.
The Saints (1-2) put forth its most efficient match of the tournament by hitting .253 as a team with five players hitting at least .300 who had at least seven attacks. Among them were
Sina Toroslu,
Sara Wagner,
Olga Sawinska,
Sonja Meyer, and
Doga Diraz.
Wagner saved her best for last, racking up 13 kills with six digs and three aces while fellow Polish countrywoman and senior Sawinska completed arguably the team's most consistent performance all weekend with another seven kills to total 29 kills on a .328 hitting percentage for the three matches. Wagner closed with 33 kills and 26 digs.
Both Sawinska and Wagner were named to the Skyhawk Invitational All-Tournament Team for their efforts.
The setters' duo of Polish sophomore
Oliwia Majtyka and newcomer
Alandra Hasbrouck nearly divided the work with Majtyka collecting 16 assists and Hasbrouck contributing with 14 assists.
Amelia Robertson led the team with 13 digs on the defensive line.
Trailing 5-3 in the first set, the Saints bounced back with six straight points mainly with Majtyka behind the service line. The sophomore setter had two aces during the span and got picked up by Sawinska, who had two kills during the run.
Stonehill came back to get within 14-13, but Siena scored six of the next seven points highlighted by a pair of kills from Toroslu, and a kill each from Wagner and
Maggie Seymour and an ace from freshman
Ma'ila Stephens. Two kills and an ace by Wagner and a kill by Sawinska put away the first set.
Down 11-10 in the second set, Siena scored five straight with Hasbrouck behind the service line and received two kills from Meyer. Robertson would pick up two more aces later in the set and Toroslu finished it off with a kill.
Ahead 13-10 in the third set, Siena got on a hot streak once again to pull away. Two kills by Diraz, two aces from Toroslu and a kill by Wagner was a part of a 7-0 run to make it 20-10. Sawinska closed it with a kill to send Siena to victory.
Indiana Purdue Fort Wayne 3, Siena 1
Earlier in the day, the Saints got off to the desired start it was seeking by hitting a resounding .408 in the opening set, but eventually cooled and were defeated 3-1 (25-20, 13-25, 15-25, 26-28) to Indiana Purdue Fort Wayne in host Stonehill College's Skyhawk Invitational in Easton, Ma.
Wagner bounced back with big game (13 kills and 11 digs) and Sawinska (10 kills), but it was not enough as the Saints (0-2) struggled with committing too many errors (21 attack errors and nine service errors) in their match versus IPFW.
Majtyka collected a team-high 15 assists and newcomer Hasbrouck contributed with 13 assists.
In the first set, the Mastodons (2-0) drew within 17-13, but the Saints responded back with four consecutive points courtesy of two kills by Wagner, an attack error by IPFW and an ace from Robertson to increase the lead to 21-13. After an IPFW point, Wagner picked up another kill followed by two Mastodon attack errors and Toroslu finished it off with a kill.
In the second set, the Mastodons took command from the onset to gain a 14-6 lead and the Saints did not get any closer.
Siena led as late as 14-12 in the third set after a kill from Sawinska. But IPFW came back with seven straight points highlighted by a pair of kills from Panna Ratkai. Siena would cut the lead back to three on a kill by Diraz, but would drop a close set by four.
IPFW jumped on the Saints early in the fourth set, winning the opening five points behind the serving of Meg Berkland. Siena clawed back to get within 9-8 of the lead on a Wagner ace, but it was IPFW from there. It would go on a 5-0 run later in the match and ultimately take it 25-15.
Siena returns to action next weekend when it takes part in the Red Flash Classic in Loretto, PA. at host Saint Francis (PA) with matches scheduled against Mercyhurst on Friday at 4 p.m. inside of DeGol Arena followed by a Saturday twin bill against Penn at 12:30 p.m. and host Saint Francis (PA) at 6 p.m.
