Eagles Fend Off Saints’ Second Half Push

Siena Men's Soccer continued its stretch of high-major competition on Tuesday evening, traveling to take on ACC foe Boston College. The Saints (1-3-3) were defeated by the Eagles (3-1-3) by a 3-1 score from Newton Campus Field in Newton, MA.

Zach Gardner sent in the lone Siena goal of the night, with the assist coming from Dren Dobruna. The Eagles had three different goal scorers in Ask Ekeland, Christian Bejar, and Marcos Dos Santos.

Bennet Glinder made one save in goal for the Saints, while Brennan Klein stopped four of five Siena shots on goal.

The Saints had one shot throughout the first half courtesy of Gardner, who's shot went wide left of goal. However, over the final 45 minutes of play, Siena out-shot BC 8-3, bringing the match total to 9-6 in favor of the Saints (5-4 on-goal).

Siena held BC without an attempt through the 19th minute, while the team's first shot on goal found the back of the net in the 25th minute off a Ekeland set piece score.  Just under five minutes later with the Eagles on the attack, Glinder came out to defend a charging Marco Dos Santos, who distributed the ball over to Bejar for the tap-in score and 2-0 advantage.

After 50 minutes of action, the Saints registered their first shot on goal in a big way. Receiving the ball on the far side of the field, Dobruna sent in a high-arcing service to Gardner, who was positioned to head in the cross and bring the match within one goal. This marked Gardner's first goal of the season, as well as the first point of Dobruna's Siena career.

With an assist already recorded earlier in the contest, Dos Santos granted BC a two-goal advantage again in the 79th minute after beating the defense down field to chip one over the head of Glinder.

The Saints refused to back away following Dos Santos' score. The Green & Gold put three shots on goal over the final nine minutes of action, two of which by Cole Hellert. However, Klein saved each one to solidify the BC victory.

Siena returns to Loudonville this Saturday, Sept. 21 to host New Jersey Institute of Technology for its final non-conference bout of the season. Kickoff from Hickey Field is set for 4 p.m.
