While the result did not go in their favor, Siena Volleyball played some of its best volleyball of the season in a tough 3-1 loss at Dartmouth (22-25, 26-24, 25-27, 21-25) to finish out the Dartmouth Invitational on late Sunday afternoon inside Leede Arena.
The Saints (1-10) played just about even across the board in most statistical categories with the hosts from the Ivy League, but allowed a few mini-runs late in sets that ultimately sunk them.
Siena was befallen by service errors (10) and attacking errors (28) on the night, but managed to stay close with spirited play from a number of players including
Sara Wagner,
Doga Diraz Salme Adeele Holla, who all finished with double-digit kills.
The teams split the opening 20 points before a Maddie LaFata kill and a pair of Siena errors opening up a Big Green lead. Dartmouth reeled off four straight points to go up 20-15 and was to close it on a kill by Emma Symon.
Siena responded well by taking the second set. Trailing 22-19, the Saints picked up five consecutive points highlighted by a kill from Diraz and an ace from
Claire Isaksen. Wagner and Sawinska each recorded a kill to put it away.
In the third set, Siena trailed 12-9, however, took the 16-14 lead after a run of five straight point punctuated by a Diraz kill off an
Oliwia Majtyka assist. The Big Green got even eat 22 and eventually won it on a kill from Piper Stevens and an ace off her hand.
Siena enjoyed a 16-14 lead in the fourth set as well when Wagner knocked it down off a feed from Isaksen. Dartmouth (7-2) pulled out six of the last seven points on kills from Tasman Mullins and Raeli Smith. Emma Engstrom picked up the ace to end it.
