Down 2-0 late to Big East foe UConn, Siena Men's Soccer made a late push to come within one goal with under 10 minutes remaining. However, the Huskies were able to resist the Saints' comeback threat to claim a 2-1 victory in Storrs, CT on Monday evening.
The sides finished even with nine shots apiece while UConn held a 3-2 edge on goal.
Olafur Freysson and
Alejandro Perez Jorda registered the team's looks on target. Sabri Hanni and Evan Pickering were responsible for the Huskies' scores.
Bennet Glinder made one save in goal for Siena, while counterpart Max Kerkvliet made a pair for UConn.
Siena's back line was in full force in the first half, helping keep the Huskies without a shot on goal. The Saints managed the only attempt on goal for either team through the first 45 minutes of action when Freysson put one on target early in the 45th minute.
Following a quiet first half, Hanni lined up for a set piece from the 18 in the 52nd minute and sent a laser past the wall and Glinder for a 1-0 advantage. Two minutes later, Pickering, positioned near goal and battling defenders, extended UConn's lead with his first collegiate goal.
Early into the 81st minute the Saints cut their deficit to one following an own goal off the heel of a Huskies defender. UConn would, however, fend off each of Siena's remaining attempts at the equalizer to cling to the one-goal victory.
Siena (1-2-2) returns home on Friday, Sept. 13 to host defending Big East Champion Xavier at 4 p.m. from Hickey Field.
