Siena Downed at the Mount

Mountaineers Shoot Past Saints

EMMITSBURG, MD - Over 50 percent shooting from both the field and from three made the difference for the Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers as the team shot its way past Siena Women's Basketball, 92-57, from Knott Arena on Thursday night.

Teresa Seppala scored a team-high 18 points (7-19 FG, 4-12 3FG) for the Saints (8-9, 5-3 MAAC), while Anajah Brown notched 10 points (5-7 FG) to go with seven rebounds. Ahniysha Jackson registered a team-high five assists.

Anna LeMaster scored a game-high 22 points for The Mount (7-10, 5-3 MAAC) much thanks to 6-7 shooting from beyond the arc. Gabrielle Kennerly added 15 points, followed by Jo Raflo with 14. The team's 52.0 clip from three was a season-high, while its 52.6 percentage from the field was its second highest mark this year.

Despite full-court pressure from the Mount off the tip, the Saints did not commit a turnover through the opening five minutes of action while shooting 50 percent from the floor (4-8). At the same time, the Mount opened red-hot - shooting 7-8 from the floor, and 4-5 from three to go up 18-10 midway through the first. That trend continued through the end of the quarter, as the Mountaineers finished 11-15 from the field, and 5-7 from three to lead 30-18 going into the second.

While the Saints settled in defensively over the ensuing 10 minutes - holding the Mount to 35.3% from the field, and 22.2% from three - their offense was also held in check, scoring nine points in the second. The Mountaineers made use of five Siena turnovers in the frame, netting 14 of 17 quarter points off the mishaps, as the Saints entered halftime behind 47-27.

The Mountaineers continued their impressive shooting night into the second half, going 13-25 from the field, and 6-9 from three, to keep Siena behind despite the team going 13-28 from the field itself in the second. A difference of seven made three-point shots, as well as 16 converted free-throws, proved too much, however.

The Saints return home Saturday to host Iona at 2 p.m. from the UHY Center. Tickets for the team's Alumni Day game can be purchased here.
