Siena Settles for Scoreless Draw with Defending MAAC Champions

Saints Earn Point for Seventh Straight Match

Siena Men's Soccer and the defending Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference champion Iona Gaels played to a scoreless draw at Mazzella Field in New Rochelle, NY, on Wednesday, allowing the Saints to secure a point for their seventh consecutive outing. Goalkeeping was instrumental in maintaining the scoreline for both sides, with each netminder recording four saves. This marked Siena's first time securing a point in New Rochelle since defeating Iona 3-0 in 2016.

Bennet Glinder recorded a shutout with four saves, facing 13 shots throughout the match. This clean sheet was his fourth of the season and the 14th of his career. Martin Piedeleu was active offensively, taking two shots, both of which were on target. Lucas Almeida and Mario Navarro Perez each contributed with a shot on goal, maintaining consistent pressure on the opposing defense.

The first half began with the Saints establishing an early rhythm, creating scoring opportunities with shots from Almeida and Piedeleu, both saved by the Gaels' goalkeeper, Fernando Alves Schmelz. Despite the defensive efforts from Iona, the Saints maintained pressure with another attempt by Mark Cajamarca, which went over the top. Glinder made a crucial save against Alvaro Maneiro in the 18th minute, keeping the score level

As the half progressed, both teams exchanged fouls, disrupting the flow of play. The Saints' defense held firm against the Gaels' offensive attempts, with no goals conceded. The half concluded without either team breaking the deadlock, resulting in a 0-0 score heading into the break.

The second half commenced with both teams seeking to break the scoreless tie. Glinder was instrumental in preserving the clean sheet, making key saves against Maneiro's attempts in the 51st and 76th minutes. Notably, Glinder stopped a one-on-one breakaway shot by Maneiro in the 71st minute to keep the match scoreless. The Saints responded with offensive pressure as Lee Mara and Rayan Berbachi each fired shots around the 64th minute, though they did not find the back of the net.

The Saints continued to press with Campbell Stalker and Navarro Perez coming close, but their efforts were saved or off-target. Several corners in the half, including one in the 83rd minute, maintained the Saints' attacking momentum. Despite the persistent offensive efforts by both sides, the match concluded with the score still level at 0-0.

The Saints hold a record of 4-4-4 overall and 3-0-3 in conference play. The Gaels stand at 4-3-4 overall and 2-1-2 in conference play.

Looking ahead, the Saints will host Niagara on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 3 p.m. at Hickey Field. Saturday's match will mark the program's senior day, with a pregame ceremony commencing at 2:35 p.m.
