Feel Good Friday; Saints Roll Past Iona

Saints improve to 2-2 in MAAC play

LOUDONVILLE, NY – Siena Volleyball got back on track with a resounding 3-0 victory over visiting Iona (25-22, 25-13, 25-12) at the UHY Center on Friday evening.

The Saints (6-10 overall, 2-2 MAAC) led nearly wire-to-wire in each set, churning several big runs and totaled nine aces from five different players.

Sophomore Alara Doganyuz led the Saints with 17 assists and season-highs of 16 digs and five aces while Doga Diraz walloped 11 kills, and Gabrielle Wire added eight kills.

After the teams see-sawed the first 12 points of the set, Siena seized control by taking seven points in a row to expand the lead to 13-6 off the hand of Diraz.

During the spurt, Diraz had two kills from Doganyuz while Ella Treasure and Elizabeth Phillips also contributed with a kill apiece.

In between Diraz also served an ace. Siena was able to close it out down the stretch, winning four of the final five points of the set capitalized by a kill from Wire.

In the second set, Siena raced out to 4-0 advantage with Doganyuz serving behind the line and adding two of her aces to start the set.

When Iona got back within one, Siena responded again with a 6-0 run led by Autumn Willmott's serving and kills from Diraz and Phillips and a combo block from Treasure and Diraz.

Willmott also dropped an ace during the run.  Siena scored five of six later in the set as well with an ace from Phillips and three assists from Alandra Hasbrouck

Siena closed it out on a kill from Berra Tok.

The Saints engineered an 8-1 start to begin the third set sparked by Doganyuz and Natalia Clifford's strong serves.

Siena took eight of 10 to capture a 17-5 edge after a kill from Mary Claire Deacy off a feed from Hasbrouck.

Siena closed it out with three straight points.

Iona (6-12, 1-3 MAAC) was led by Ezzie Thompson, who had five kills and three blocks.

Next up, Siena plays on Saturday at 2 p.m. when it hosts Manhattan (2-10, 0-3 MAAC) in another MAAC match up.
