Reserve Riley Pettigrew completed her brace in the 86
th minute as fourth-seeded Sacred Heart rallied past No. 5 seed Siena Women's Soccer in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Quarterfinals in Fairfield, Connecticut.
Sacred Heart (10-8-1) advances to the MAAC Semifinals, where they will make the short trip across town to take on Regular Season Champion and top-seed Fairfield Thursday at 6 p.m.
Siena (9-5-6) got off to a hot start, claiming an immediate lead on their very first possession off the opening kickoff. A cross from the right was pinballed around and finished by
Briana Neary to put the Saints in front just 25 seconds in.
Cate Flanagan and
Catherine Rogers were credited with the assists, with Flanagan capping her program single-season record at 12 assists.
But Siena couldn't build upon the early momentum, and the Pioneers responded. Pettigrew made an almost immediate impact coming off the bench, knotting the score in the 26
th minute to end the Saints program-record shutout streak at 538:19. The goal was the first allowed by Siena in 29 days, spanning seven matches.
The Saints had the upper hand for most of the second half offensively, but a rare Sacred Heart opportunity proved decisive. The Pioneers found space off a counter and Shea Kelleher threaded the needle to send Pettigrew on to the winning score. VAR upheld the review, as Sacred Heart went in front with just 4:39 remaining. It marked just the second time all season in which Siena allowed multiple goals in a match, the only other occurrence coming at defending National Champion and then top-ranked North Carolina back on Aug. 17.
The Saints held a 15-11 advantage in shots and 4-3 margin in corners.
Cate Burns made four saves for Siena which suffered a second straight late setback in the MAAC Quarterfinals following a five-match win streak in the round.
Kyran Thievon stopped three shots for the Pioneers which pushed their unbeaten streak to six straight over the Saints (4-0-2) dating back to before they joined the MAAC.
