LOUDONVILLE, NY - The campus of Marist University will soon have a hint of green brightening it up. Siena Women's Basketball marched into McCann Arena Thursday evening and left with an 81-69 victory over the Marist Red Foxes, completing the season sweep of its I-87 rival.
Ahniysha Jackson poured in a team-high 25 points and, in doing so, became just the third player in program history to reach 200 career made three-point field goals as part of a 5-9 showing beyond the arc. She was also perfect from the line going 6-6, while dishing out four assists.
Teresa Seppala added 18 points on near-perfect shooting - going 5-6 from the field, 2-2 from three, and 6-6 from the line to push her consecutive made streak from the line to 38.
Anajah Brown dropped 15 points to go with six rebounds, enough to eclipse 600 for her career, while
Zyriah Price led Siena (13-10, 10-4 MAAC) with seven boards.
Aniya Hooker did a bit of everything - scoring six points, finishing tied for a team-high five assists, and totaling a team-high four steals. Both her assist and steal totales served as career-highs.
Morgan Lee scored a game-high 26 points for Marist (12-11, 7-6 MAAC), while teammate Lexie Tarul contributed 16 in the losing effort.
Siena peppered the paint early, scoring 14 of 23 first-quarter points near the rim. Six different Saints found the bottom of the net over the first 10 minutes of play, none more than Seppala and her seven points. Whereas Siena forced four Red Fox turnovers for four additional points, the Green and Gold displayed exceptional control on offense - committing zero turnovers in the first to aid in an early 23-15 edge.
Still, the Red Foxes never let the game get out of reach. Despite Jackson knocking down a three to open the second and grow the Siena lead to 11, Marist chipped away and got within two points at 28-26 midway through. However, paint presence by Price, Brown, and inside-out game by Seppala maintained the Siena lead. And, once again, a
Myriam Traore three-pointer to beat the halftime horn sent Siena into the break with a 42-35 edge.
The momentum of the final second shot carried over into the third, as the Saints opened the fresh half on a 9-0 run with five points coming from
Peppi Lohko. Marist stopped the run two minutes in; however, Siena continued to pour it in with another 23-point quarter while holding the Red Foxes to 16 to grow its lead to 14 points entering the fourth.
Although the Saints struggled shooting from the field in the fourth, Marist did just as well - making a comeback nearly impossible to accomplish. The Red Foxes cut their deficit down to just 12, which would be the difference by the time the final buzzer sounded.
The Saints return home to host Sacred Heart at 6 p.m. on Sat., Feb. 15. Tickets for the Saturday night game can be purchased
