BUFFALO, NY - Western New York belongs to Siena Women's Basketball in the 2024-25 season. The
Terry Primm-led Saints did something the program hadn't done since the 2016-17 season: go on the road and defeat Niagara and Canisius in the same season. Siena took care of Niagara Thursday before topping Canisius Saturday afternoon, 72-58, from Koessler Athletic Center.
Ahniysha Jackson led the Saints (16-10, 13-4 MAAC) with 23 points on 50% shooting (10-20 FG), as well as with a team and season-high eight rebounds.
Aniya Hooker was big down the stretch, leading to a career-high 14 points on 7-10 shooting.
Teresa Seppala found double-digits again with 10 points along with a team-high three steals.
Zyriah Price was big on the boards, coming down with seven - four of which on the offensive glass.
The Saints forced four turnovers early - including a pair of shot clock violations - to help limit Canisius to four shot attempts throughout the first 5:30 of play. Despite five more looks, three more rebounds, and two fewer turnovers than the Golden Griffins by the end of the quarter, the Saints entered the second trailing by one.
Canisus went 5-9 over the first 10 minutes, and 2-3 from deep to lead 15-14. Fouls played a role in Siena's slight early deficit as the Golden Griffins went to the line seven times, making three. Both
Anajah Brown and Price picked up two each in the first.
The Saints continued forcing Canisius into mistakes in the second quarter, this time turning them into points on the opposite end. Siena had eight takeaways in the frame which led to 10 points on offense, and also held the Golden Griffins to limited looks once again. With that, the defense kept Canisius to 2-7 from the field in the second to help take a 28-25 lead into half. By that time, Jackson was up to a game-high 12 points, while Brown and
Ana Conde were the only other Saints in double figures with four each.
Just as was the case in the first half, Siena utilized the pain in the third quarter for 14 of its 20 points scored in the frame. The Green and Gold climbed out to its largest lead of the afternoon with 1:48 to play following a
KB Hadley fastbreak layup that put the team up by 11. However, the Golden Griffins scored the final five points of the third to enter the fourth with the Saints ahead, 48-42.
Siena created separation through the early portions of the fourth, holding Canisius to 2-12 shooting through 5:30 of the quarter. Capped with a run of shooting 3-4 from the field over two minutes, the Saints held a 58-47 advantage with 4:30 to play. Rookies Hooker and
Myriam Traore kept the Golden Griffins away down the stretch, combining for 10 of Siena's final 14 points in the game to help end February with a sixth-straight win.
The Saints return to action next Saturday, Mar. 1, when the team hosts Mount St. Mary's at 2 p.m. from the UHY Center.
