Saints Topped in Final Florida Games

Softball Topped by Cornell and UNF

Siena Softball completed its first trip to the Sunshine State Sunday afternoon, playing in its final two Make it Happen Games. The Saints fell to Cornell, 6-5, before dropping its second contest to North Florida (UNF), 6-0.

Cornell 6, Siena 5

Siena's bats went to work early with one run in the second followed by three in the third. The game's opening run came when Ashlee Sweet deposited a single into center to bring in Ashley Giampolo before Emma Petersen drove in a pair the following inning on a double. Gianna DiMeglio added one more run in the third by way of single, making it a 4-0 Saints advantage.

The Big Red broke through with their first run in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single, but Siena matched it in the top of the fifth when Petersen scored following an E6.

Similar to Saturday's matchup, however, Cornell used the sixth inning to go ahead and not look back. Back-to-back bases-loaded RBI singles made it a 5-3 game, while a walk brought the Big Red within one. A two-out RBI double during the next at-bat granted Cornell its first lead of the game at 6-5.

Giampolo opened the seventh with a triple, but was subsequently thrown out retreating to third. The Saints would have one more runner in scoring position in the inning with two outs, but Cornell finished the job unharmed.

North Florida 6, Siena 0

Allison Benning of UNF hurled a perfect game over 77 pitches in Siena's game two loss. Kaycie Kennedy picked up the defeat after one inning of work in the circle. Valerie Pedersen got her first taste of collegiate action, pitching four innings with just one run allowed on three hits, three walks, and one hit batter.

UNF put up three runs in the first inning, two of which on a pair of RBI doubles, and another on an RBI single. The Ospreys added in the third on an RBI single, while an insurance run touched home in the sixth on a sacrifice fly.

Siena returns to action on Wednesday, Mar. 5, at South Florida. First pitch of the doubleheader from USF Softball Stadium in Tampa, FL, is set for 4 p.m.
