Kicking off its 2025 season in the Palmetto State, Siena Softball went unblemished over its first two games at the CSU Kickoff Tournament hosted by Charleston Southern University. The combination of
Alissa Eimont and
Kaycie Kennedy went 14 innings with no runs allowed, leading to a 6-0 win over the Georgetown Hoyas in game one, followed by a 3-0 victory over the CSU Bucs in the nightcap.
Siena 6, Georgetown 0
Eimont dazzled in her season debut in the circle, tossing a complete game shutout with just three hits allowed. She struck out four and walked none while facing three over the minimum.
Ashley Giampolo went a perfect 4-4 at the plate with three doubles, as did
Chloe Cummings with a 3-3 performance including a pair of two-baggers.
Eimont worked out of the top of the first with just one hit allowed and immediately received run support. With two gone in the inning, Giampolo connected a two-out double to right center, and was driven in on an
Emma Petersen RBI single for a 1-0 Saints lead entering the second.
Eimont cruised through the middle portions of the game, setting down 13 in a row until the Hoyas reached base on an error in the top of the fifth. However, she still escaped the inning untouched. Meanwhile in the bottom of the fourth,
Gianna DiMeglio recorded her first collegiate RBI on an infield single to the pitcher, scoring Cummings from third.
The Saints tacked on three more in the bottom of the sixth with RBI knocks from
Carlie Venables on a single,
Lauren Melton on a triple, and Giampolo on a triple before Eimont shut the door in the top of the seventh.
Siena 3, CSU 0
Much of game two was a pitchers' duel between
Kaycie Kennedy and CSU's Mackenzie Rutkoff. CSU put the ball in play over the opening four frames, but key plays by Siena fielders such as
Lauren Melton in left,
Ella Milante throwing out a runner from behind the plate, and a diving
Carlie Venables catch at short helped keep runners off base.
Siena also made some noise at the plate, with hits by
Chloe Cummings,
Emma Petersen, and
Karissa Rice across the middle innings. But each team the Saints couldn't piece hits together to push across run support as the game remained scoreless midway through.
The Bucs finally broke through to Kennedy in the bottom of the fifth, getting its first hit of the game and putting its first runner into scoring position. However, Kennedy induced a flyout to Cummings in center to escape the jam.
In the ensuing half inning, Petersen and
Gracie Goewey broke the game open on consecutive pitches. Petersen belted a long home run over the scoreboard in left field before Goewey took the very next ball off the light tower in left center field for her first collegiate long ball, and a 2-0 lead.
CSU threatened again in the sixth with two on and no outs, but Melton's glove came through again. The freshman snagged a fly ball for the first out before going on to do the same for out number two. On the second out, Melton tossed out the runner from second attempting to tag to third to close the inning. Upon replay review the call stood.
Kennedy left no room for CSU in the seventh, retiring the side in order to end the game.
The Saints are slated for two more Saturday against Bellarmine at 12:30 p.m., and CSU at 5:30 p.m.
