For just the third time in program history, Siena Softball is off to a 5-0 start. The Saints matched the records of the 1978 (5-0) and 2023 (6-0) teams for the best starts in program history following their 7-1 win over the Georgetown Hoyas (3-2) in the team's final game of the CSU Kickoff Tournament in Charleston, SC, Sunday morning.
Ashley Giampolo,
Gracie Goewey, and
Chloe Cummings each had two hits over three at-bats - Cummings and Giampolo doing so with one double each. Giampolo and
Ella Milante had two RBI each. As a team, the Saints worked six walks - two of which coming from
Carlie Venables.
Alissa Eimont won her second game of the weekend, going the distance with just one unearned run allowed on three hits and two walks. She also struck out seven Hoyas along the way.
Eimont worked through a two-out walk to escape the first inning unharmed, and looked to do the exact same in the top of the second when a fielding error set Georgetown up with two on and two away. The Hoyas capitalized on the mistake with a single on the next at-bat, scoring the runner from second to lead 1-0.
The Saints immediately loaded the bases in the home half of the second, leading to Milante depositing a 2-RBI double to left to grant the team its first lead of the morning. Giampolo extended the lead with two away in the frame with a 2-RBI single as the Saints took a 4-1 lead into the third.
Eimont set the Georgetown side down in order in the third and fourth innings, extending her streak to seven consecutive batters retired going back to the second. The redshirt-junior retired the first two Hoyas in the fifth to reach nine in a row, but surrendered a 2-out double before striking out the next batter to get out of the frame.
Siena added insurance in the bottom of the fifth, with Cummings singling in
Mckenzie Faherty, as well as in the sixth with RBI hits from
Emma Petersen and
Karissa Rice. Eimont came back out for the seventh to secure the complete game victory.
Siena returns to the field next Saturday, Feb. 15 for a pair of games at Delaware State starting at noon.
