Siena Opens MAAC Play with Split at Quinnipiac

Saints and Bobcats Exchange 8-4 Victories

Siena Softball kicked off its Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) slate Tuesday afternoon with a pair of games against the Quinnipiac Bobcats in Hamden, CT.  The Saints opened conference action with an 8-4 victory over the Bobcats in the first game of the afternoon before suffering an 8-4 loss in game two.

Siena 8, Quinnipiac 4

The Saints took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. Gianna DiMeglio drove in a run in her third consecutive game, doubling home Gracie Goewey for the early lead. Following two clean innings out of Alissa Eimont, the Bobcats stuck with two outs in the bottom of the third. Sofia Verga connected for a two-run home run to put Quinnipiac up 2-1 going into the fourth.

Quinnipiac's lead was short lived, however, as Siena put up four runs the following half inning. Carlie Venables started things off with a two-out RBI single to tie the game, before Chloe Cummings wore a pitch to put the team back in front 3-2. Lauren Melton stepped in and brought home Venables and McKenzie Swinson on a double, making it 5-2 midway through.

Eimont got through the fourth in order while the offense tacked on three more runs for her in the fifth. DiMeglio produced another RBI double and later scored on a delayed steal of home, while Venables had a bunt single that plated Goewey. The freshman DiMeglio's second RBI double of the day served as her team-leading fifth multi-RBI game of the season.

The Bobcats chipped away for two runs in the bottom of the sixth to make it an 8-4 game, but Eimont kept the home team off the board in the seventh for her eighth complete game of the season.

Quinnipiac 8, Siena 4

Just as in game one, Siena struck first in the second game when Emma Petersen singled in Lauren Melton for an early 1-0 lead.

The Bobcats responded in the bottom of the second on an infield single to third, tying the game at 1-1. Kaycie Kennedy limited the damage, getting the next batter to foul out to Madi Silber behind the dish.

Quinnipiac came back with a big third inning, plating six runners to pull ahead 7-1 entering the fourth inning.

Siena found the board again in the top of the fifth when Carlie Venables drove in Gianna DiMeglio to make it a 7-2 game. Melton immediately drove in another to make it a four run game - bringing up Ashley Giampolo with the bases loaded and one out. However, she and Petersen went down on strikes to end the inning with the Saints down 7-3.

Quinnipiac answered with one in the bottom of the fifth to jump back up by five, while McKenzie Swinson cut the Bobcats' lead back to four in the top of the sixth with an RBI double. Chloe Cummings looked to add two more runs to the frame following Swinson's hit, but she flew out to right field to end the inning. That would be Siena's last scoring opportunity as the team was set down in the seventh unable to get runners into scoring position.

The Saints (14-11, 1-1 MAAC) return to action this weekend for a three-game series at Iona. The sides meet for the first two on Saturday, Mar. 29, with game one of the twin bill starting at noon in New Rochelle, NY.
