LOUDONVILLE, NY - Siena Softball and the Dartmouth Big Green met for just the fourth time ever Tuesday evening as the sides took Siena Softball Field for a single non-conference contest. After trailing 7-0 early in the game, Siena fought back to take a lead in the sixth before Dartmouth delivered the game-winning two-run home run in the seventh for a 10-9 victory.
The Big Green opened with the first seven runs of the game over the first two innings, highlighted by a grand slam in the top of the second, as well as a two-run home run not long after.
But the Saints came storming right back.
Ashley Giampolo started a run of six consecutive Siena runs with an RBI double in the top of the second, while
Gracie Goewey belted her fifth home run of the season in the bottom of the third - a two-run shot - to make it 7-3. Siena scored an additional two more in the third to come within two runs.
Then in the fourth, a wild pitch brought home Goewey to make it a 7-6 game. In the meantime, relief pitcher
Kaycie Kennedy kept Dartmouth in check between the third and fifth innings to allow the Saints to creep back into the game. The Big Green would, however, add one in the sixth on a sacrifice fly to go up 8-6.
More Siena spark took place in the home half of the sixth when
Cali DeLawder and
Gianna DiMeglio each reached on two-out walks, setting up Giampolo's game-tying two-RBI double to left center. The next batter,
Lauren Melton, put the Saints ahead for the first time after sending a moonshot off the center field fence for a triple - easily sending in Giampolo from second.
Trailing 9-8 with two outs and two strikes in the top of the seventh, Jenna Brown sent a two-run home run over the left field wall to put the Big Green back ahead. Looking for more magic in the bottom half, the Saints went down in order to end the game.
Siena returns to the field tomorrow, Apr. 2, to host Stonehill for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. on ESPN+.
