Siena’s Historic Season Comes to an End

Saints Fall to Marist in MAAC Championship

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - After battling to a pair of elimination game victories Saturday afternoon, Siena Softball squared off with the top-seeded Marist Red Foxes in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship Sunday morning from Softball Park on the campus of Marist. Needing two wins to earn a second-straight league title, the Saints fell to the Red Foxes 10-2 in five innings in the first game.

Siena's season was nothing short of historic as the program qualified for its third MAAC Championship Series in four seasons, as well as its second in as many seasons. The Saints also set a single-season program record for wins with 36 - topping the previous mark of 33 set by last season's championship-winning team.

Marist applied pressure right away in the bottom of the first as the first three batters reached base on a double, walk, and bunt single. The next batter, Maddie Pleasants, connected for a grand slam over left field - making the way for Siena to bring in Alissa Eimont in the circle. Samantha Rogers later hit a two-run home run, while a solo homer off the bat of Maddie Gore, and three more runs gave the Red Foxes a 9-0 lead after one full.

Not backing down, Siena loaded the bases in the second inning. Lauren Melton got the Green and Gold on the board with a base hit up the middle, while McKenzie Swinson hit into a fielder's choice which sent Ella Milante home from third to chip away and make it 9-2.

Upon entering in the first inning, Kaycie Kennedy kept Marist off the board for three full innings until Rogers connected for her second home run of the game with two outs in the fourth - a solo shot - to make it 10-2. Needing one run to extend the game, Chloe Cummings led off the top of the fifth with a single, but the next three Saints went down in order.
