Saints Set Single-Season Wins Record in Postseason Win

Goewey Tosses Shutout, Drives in Lone Run

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - It was Gracie Goewey's day in Siena Sotball's opening game of the 2025 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championships. The sophomore tossed a complete game shutout, and drove in Siena's lone run of the game in the team's 1-0 victory over the Canisius Golden Griffins from Softball Park. In doing so, the Saints collected their 34th win of the season - setting a new single-season record for victories.

Siena will remain in the winner's bracket, and advance to take on top-seed and host Marist at 2 p.m. Thursday.

Goewey, Chloe Cummings, Gianna DiMeglio (2B), and Ella Milante (2B) each had one hit. In the circle, Goewey fanned nine batters with just two hits allowed. Canisius also hit into 12 flyouts off the sophomore and no groundouts.

Goewey escaped a leadoff walk in the top half of the first inning, and helped her own cause in the home half of the frame. With two outs and Emma Petersen on first, the sophomore laced a double into the right field corner, allowing Petersen to come all the way home for a 1-0 lead. Goewey was thrown out attempting to leg it into a triple, however, to move into the second.

Hanging to the one-run edge, Goewey continued to mow down the Golden Griffin lineup - striking out seven batters through the opening three innings, and moving through the fourth harmless as well.

In the fifth, however, Canisius opened as it did in the first with its leadoff hitter reaching base - this time by way of a single off the bat of Bailey Alatorre. The Golden Griffins eventually loaded the bases, but a lineout to Ashley Giampolo at second, and a screaming fly ball to Lauren Melton in left put an end to the scoring threat and kept the Saints ahead 1-0 after 4.5 innings.

While Siena couldn't tack on an insurance, that was no issue for Goewey as she retired the final six batters to put a close to the game.
