LOUDONVILLE, NY – First game, first win as Siena University. Sophomores
Lily Farrell and
Briana Neary netted first half goals to propel Siena Women's Soccer to a 2-0 season-opening victory over Lafayette on Hickey Field.
Despite a one-hour weather delay at the start, Siena wasted no time in setting the tone early for the 2025 season. In the 14
th minute,
Cate Flanagan threw in to
Catherine Rogers on the left side who curled around two defenders and centered to Farrell who finished her first collegiate marker inside the right corner.
Neary doubled the advantage in the 28
th minute after Flanagan corralled a loose ball turnover and centered to the striker who finished back across inside the near post.
The early strikes proved to be more than enough for a stout veteran Saints defense which bequeathed just one shot on goal. Overall, Siena held an 8-7 edge in shots and a 5-4 margin in corners, while snapping a three-match losing streak in season-openers, and avenging last year's lid-lifter defeat against Lafayette in Pennsylvania.
The Saints now set their sights on arguably the stiffest test in program history when they take on reigning National Champion and top-ranked North Carolina Sunday at 1 p.m. in Chapel Hill.
