Sweeps Ahoy! Volleyball Cruises Past CCSU

Saints head coach Kanelos earns first win with program

Firing on all cylinders, Siena Volleyball got off to a fast start and never looked back en route to a 3-0 (25-16, 25-13, 25-23) sweep against Central Connecticut State on Sunday morning on the third and final day of the Stony Brook Invitational on Long Island.

Siena (1-2) gave new head coach Tyler Kanelos his first victory as a Saint.

Junior right side Doga Diraz put down a team-high 11 kills, Alara Doganyuz contributed with her third consecutive double-double with 19 assists and 12 digs while the team received all-around efforts from Gabrielle Wire (10 kills on a .346 hitting percentage with six digs), Mary Claire Deacy (eight kills on a .625 hitting percentage) and Elizabeth Phillips (six kills, 10 digs, two aces).

Diraz was named to the Stony Brook Invitational All-Tournament Team for leading the Saints. The six-foot-three Turkish native produced 30 kills, 10 total blocks and eight digs over the course of the weekend.

The Blue Devils (0-3) and Saints played to an 11-11 tie in the opening set before Siena went on a 4-0 run to create some separation.

Kills from Berra Tok and Phillips followed by a Blue Devil attacking error and an ace off the hand of Autumn Willmott provided a 15-11 lead.

Siena grabbed three consecutive points later in the set on kills from Wire and a pair from Deacy to push the lead to seven.  An ace from Doganyuz and a service error from CCSU sealed the first set for Siena.

Siena sprung out to a 6-0 advantage in the second set with Doganyuz serving behind the service line. With Phillips serving and Deacy providing two more kills, the Saints strung together five more consecutive points to grab a 14-5 lead. CCSU could get no closer than within five for the remainder of the set as Oliwia Majtyka finished it off with an ace.

In the third set, Siena got off fast again—this time capturing a 5-1 edge with a kill from Wire and four straight kills from Diraz.

CCSU cut the lead to 7-5, but Siena responded with four straight points to go up 11-5. CCSU rallied back to tie it at 23-all on two kills by Weronika Poczynek during a 4-0 Blue Devils run. But an attack error by CCSU and a kill by Diraz ended it.

Next up, Siena travels to Loretto, PA to take part in the Altoona Grand Red Flash Classic on the campus of Saint Francis (PA) on Friday at 6 p.m. against the host Red Flash (1-2).
