Volleyball Falls in Four to Columbia

Diraz, Wire Named to Clocktower Hotel All-Tournament Team

LOUDONVILLE, NY – Siena Volleyball wrapped up its weekend of play in its' hosted Clocktower Tournament presented by the Clocktower Hotel with a 3-1 defeat (22-25, 25-23, 15-25, 19-25) to Columbia on Saturday evening at the UHY Center.

Siena (3-6) hit .216 for the match, but were faced with a hot-hitting Lions' team that hit .329 and had 59 kills against just 13 attacking errors. 

In the opening set, the teams traded off points to a 15-15 tie before Columbia (1-5) took command with a 5-0 run with a pair of aces from Charlotte Gravlee. 

Siena got within two after an ace from Natalia Clifford, but Elena Maynulet put it away with a kill.

Columbia reeled off six consecutive points to take a 16-11 advantage in set two behind the serving of Maynulet.

However, the Saints rallied back with a 5-1 run to finish off the set with two kills and an ace from Doga Diraz.

In the third set, the Lions took a 15-9 lead with kills from Maynulet and Avery Jones.

Siena came back with three straight points on a kill from Elizabeth Phillips, an ace from Amelia Robertson and a kill from Diraz.

Columbia responded by scoring six of the next seven points with Maynulet serving behind the line.

Clara Yu finished off the set with an ace.

The Lions scored the first four points in the fourth set with a pair of aces off the hand of Delaney Seaman. 

Siena ran off five straight points with Autumn Willmott serving behind the line and Ella Treasure contributing with back-to-back kills. 

Columbia led 18-17 until the Lions won seven of the final nine points to close it out.  

Doga Diraz led the Saints with 17 kills, three aces and five digs while Gabrielle Wire came up with 14 kills on a .333 hitting percentage and sophomore setter Alara Doganyuz totaled 28 assists and 10 digs for her seventh double-double this season.  

Diraz and Wire were each selected to the Clocktower Hotel All-Tournament team for their three matches of work. 

Other tournament selections included three student athletes from Belmont with Breanna Kauffeld being named the MVP to join teammates Brooke Gilleland and Lilly Lutz on the All-Tournament.

Stonehill was represented by Mia Berardino and Gabi Polishuk. 

Columbia's selections included Presley Liberty and Elena Maynulet.  

Next up, Siena travels to Syracuse to take on the Orange (6-1) on Friday at 6 p.m.
