Siena Volleyball dropped its early match to St. John's 3-1 (19-25, 20-25, 25-20, 8-25) on Saturday at the Women's Building on the second and final day of the Syracuse Invitational, but rallied back in the nightcap to earn a sweep at Le Moyne with a 3-0 victory (25-20, 25-10, 25-21) behind a robust .447 hitting percentage.
The Saints were clicking on all cylinders—especially in the opening set— when it had 18 kills against just one error on 28 total attacks for an eye-popping .607 hitting percentage.
Siena easily won the second set on a .478 hitting percentage while the Dolphins had just four kills against eight errors in the set.
The Saints closed it out in the third set with a more modest .240 mark.
Siena jumped ahead 15-8 in the first set with kills from
Doga Diraz and
Elizabeth Phillips and a combined block from
Berra Tok and Diraz.
Le Moyne got within five points of the lead, but Siena earned a side out after a service error by the Dolphins and Diraz finished it out with a pair of kills.
In the second set, Siena went on a key 7-0 run to go ahead 10-2 with
Autumn Willmott serving behind the line.
Kills were made by Diraz,
Ella Treasure and Phillips during the spurt.
Siena went on another 4-0 run with Treasure serving and kills were put down by Treasure and Deacy.
A kill by Diraz put away the set.
In the third set, Le Moyne took a 12-11 lead on a kill by Branwyn Lupton. But Siena reclaimed the lead on a 4-0 run with Willmott serving once again.
The Dolphins (1-10) tied it as late as 19-all after another kill by Lupton, but Diraz and a combined block from Tok and Diraz put Siena back on top by two.
Two more kills from Diraz helped Siena complete the sweep.
Diraz topped out with 15 kills and three blocks while
Gabrielle Wire added 10 kills and three digs.
Doganyuz led with 21 assists, seven digs and two aces.
Willmott had a team-high 14 digs.
Earlier in the day, Siena dropped the opening two sets against Big East Conference opponent St. John's before forcing a fourth set.
Siena (4-8) responded back to win the third set with 11 kills against just three errors on 33 total attacks to force a fourth set.
The Red Storm led 10-5, however the Saints went on a 15-5 run to take command 20-15.
Phillips served an ace, a kill from Treasure, and a pair of combined blocks from Tok and
Natalia Clifford and then Tok and
Kayla Jones reignited Siena.
The spurt continued with kills from Clifford,
Mary Claire Deacy and Phillips as well an ace from Clifford. Siena took advantage from three straight attacking errors by St. John's and Deacy put down another kill to put them up five.
Siena was able to finish it out on three kills from Clifford and another from Jones.
The Red Storm led in the other three sets, getting out a 5-1 start in the first set, a 9-4 advantage in the second set and a 9-1 start in the fourth set.
Kendall White (12 kills), Erin Jones (11 kills, 23 assists, 14 digs) and Ana Franca Benjamin (11 kills, 12 digs) led the way for St. John's (4-8).
Deacy and
Doga Diraz led the Saints with eight kills apiece, sophomore setter
Alara Doganyuz tallied 17 assists while Clifford had a career-high seven kills with 11 digs, one ace and one block.
Diraz was named the Syracuse Invitational All-Tournament Team
Next up, Siena returns home to the UHY Center for the conference opener hosting Saint Peter's (4-6) on Friday at 6 p.m.
