Rider Tops Siena in Four Sets

Saints drop to 1-1 in conference play

LOUDONVILLE, NY – Siena Volleyball ended up with a split on the weekend as it dropped its first conference match of the season to Rider 3-1 (17-25, 15-25, 25-22, 15-25) on Saturday afternoon at the UHY Center.

After the Saints (5-9, 1-0 MAAC) hit a lofty .413 a night earlier versus Saint Peter's, Siena cooled to hit .200 against the Broncs.

Rider was on point with their efficiency, striking for 57 kills against just 10 errors in the match and hit .382 to improve to 4-8 overall and 2-0 in MAAC play.

The trio of Broncs on the front line (Kiannisha Santiago-15 kills, Erynn Gotsch-14 kills and Carley McAleavey-13 kills) provided the brunt of the attack.

Siena got back into the match by taking the third set with a .375 hitting percentage.

With Rider leading 18-17, the Saints responded by winning five straight points on two kills from Doga Diraz, two more from Berra Tok and another from Elizabeth Phillips.

Diraz came up with two more kills and Autumn Willmott served an ace for the Saints to secure the set.

Rider went ahead 6-2 in the fourth set after a kill from Rylah Robinson, an ace from Santiago and a combined block from Robinson and McAleavey.

Rider had a pair of 4-0 runs to capture an 18-9 lead with Molly Rohde serving behind the line and picking up an ace.

Siena got within seven, but the Broncs finished with a kill from Rohde.

In the opening set, Siena got within 18-15 when Ella Treasure served an ace and Rider committed an attacking error.

But, the Broncs answered back with five consecutive points with Makenna Mason serving behind the line.

Santiago finished out with the set with a kill.

In the second set, Rider jumped out to a 9-1 advantage with kills from Rohde, McAleavey, Santiago and Robinson. Siena reeled off three points in a row off a kill from Phillips, a block from Treasure and Doganyuz and an ace from Diraz to make it 20-13.

The Broncs won five of the next seven points to secure the set.

Diraz had 14 kills (.258 hitting percentage) with six digs and two aces while Wire produced 13 kills (.219 hitting percentage) with a pair of digs.

Sophomore setter Alara Doganyuz led the team in assists with 24 while Alandra Hasbrouck had 13 assists and five digs.

Next up, Siena plays at Marist (1-11, 0-1 MAAC) on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in another MAAC match up.
