LOUDONVILLE, NY —
Bennet Glinder became Siena's all-time leader in career shutouts, while
Benjamin Fogarty delivered the decisive goal to lift the Saints to a 1-0 victory over Canisius Wednesday afternoon at Hickey Field.
Siena (3-5-4, 1-1-3) dominated possession and scoring opportunities, finishing with a commanding 25-4 advantage in shots, including a 16-1 edge in the second half. Glinder made three saves across 90 minutes to secure his 18th career shutout, surpassing the previous program record, while Fogarty converted a second-half penalty kick for his first career goal.
The Saints applied consistent pressure throughout the opening half, recording nine shots and five corner kicks while keeping Canisius (1-10-1, 0-5-1) off the scoreboard. Glinder turned aside the Golden Griffins' first two attempts from Romero Nicolazzo in the eighth and 15th minutes before Siena began generating chances of its own. The Saints came inches from breaking the deadlock in the 19th minute, as
Ivan Struk struck the right post before
Lucas Almeida hit the crossbar just 11 seconds later. Siena continued to threaten through the remainder of the half, forcing multiple saves from Canisius goalkeeper Adam Schantz, but the teams entered the break scoreless.
Siena maintained its attacking momentum after halftime, producing seven shots and three corner kicks between the 53rd and 63rd minutes. Schantz denied
Jacob Humienny during the stretch, while
Lee Mara and the Saints continued to test the Canisius defense. Glinder came up with another important stop in the 70th minute, denying Glodie Mata to preserve the scoreless draw and set the stage for Siena's breakthrough.
The decisive moment came at 74:16, when Fogarty stepped to the penalty spot and calmly converted to give the Saints a 1-0 lead. Siena continued to push for an insurance goal, with
Ingvar Kolbjornsen striking the left post before Almeida forced another save in the 82nd minute and hit the woodwork again in the 90th. The Saints' defensive pressure held the rest of the way, allowing Glinder to cap his record-setting performance with the shutout.
Almeida paced Siena with seven shots, including two on target, while Fogarty made the most of his lone attempt to provide the game-winner. Glinder's three-save performance secured his place atop the program's career shutout leaderboard as the Saints earned their first victory since Sept. 15.
Siena returns to action Saturday, Oct. 17, traveling to Emmitsburg, MD, to face Mount St. Mary's at 5 p.m. at Waldron Family Stadium.
