Saints Overmatch Jaspers

Deacy, Edwards, Wire Pile On Big Numbers

LOUDONVILLE, NY – Gaudy statistical lines set by the Siena Volleyball team led to a 3-1 victory over Manhattan (25-19, 25-15, 20-25, 25-22) on Friday night at the UHY Center as the Saints extended its winning streak to three straight and moved to the .500 mark for the first time this late into a season since the 2019 campaign.

Siena (8-8 overall, 3-1 Metro) finished with 63 kills and a .290 hitting percentage while holding Manhattan to 51 kills and a .176 mark.

Sophomore right side Mary Claire Deacy set a career high with 23 digs and tied a career-high with 21 kills while adding five blocks and junior setter Abby Edwards matched her career-high from three nights earlier against Marist with another 53-assist performance along with four aces and eight digs.

Deacy is the first Siena player since Nicole Deobler on Sept. 15, 2018 to record at least 20 kills and at least 20 digs in a single match.

Edwards's back-to-back 50 plus assist matches is a feat not done by a Siena player since Jessica Eblin achieved it on Oct. 28 against Saint Peter's (51 assists) and against Rider (55 assists) on Oct. 29, 2017.

Junior outside hitter Gabrielle Wire added 20 kills while hitting .462 in what was her second consecutive 20-kill outing and redshirt senior libero Brooke Malek collected 25 digs and added seven assists.

Manhattan dropped to 2-13 overall and 1-3 in Metro play.

Set-by-Set
Siena answered a late push by closing the first set with four straight points after Manhattan got within 21-19, finishing the set on kills from Deacy around a Malek ace and a Manhattan attack error. Earlier, Siena built the opening stretch through Deacy, Alison Goldberg and Wire, with Edwards repeatedly setting the attack as the Saints moved ahead 10-6. Manhattan worked back to tie the set at 13-13, but Brianna Miller responded with a kill and Siena later used a Hannah Bowman serving turn that included an ace to create separation at 18-14. Wire finished with seven kills in the set, while Deacy added six, including the final point in Siena's 25-19 win.

Siena controlled the second set from the opening serve, with Edwards serving the first eight points and recording four aces as Siena built an 8-0 lead. Deacy added two kills in that opening stretch, one set by Edwards and one by Malek, while Deacy also factored into two blocks. Manhattan made short pushes, including four straight points to bring the set to 14-9, but Siena answered with kills from Deacy, Wire and Goldberg to stay in front. With Siena ahead 21-15, Maggie Seymour and Deacy combined on a block, Seymour followed with back-to-back kills, and Miller finished the 25-15 set win with a kill from Edwards.

Siena pushed the third set to an 18-18 tie before Manhattan answered with the next three points and eventually took the set, 25-20. Earlier, Siena matched Manhattan point-for-point in the opening stretch, with Wire, Deacy and Miller recording kills before Siena moved ahead 5-4 on a Manhattan attack error. Siena continued to respond in the middle of the set, as Deacy and Goldberg combined for a block to make it 15-15 before Wire, Goldberg and Miller added kills to keep the score level at 18-18. After Manhattan went ahead 21-18 and later 22-19, Wire's fifth kill of the set brought Siena within 22-20, but Manhattan scored the final three points.

Siena held off Manhattan late in the fourth set, with Miller putting the Saints on set point at 24-22 before Wire finished the 25-22 set win off an Edwards assist. Earlier, Siena recovered from a 2-0 start by tying the set at 2-2 on a block by Deacy and Goldberg, then moved in front during a back-and-forth opening stretch behind kills from Deacy, Seymour and Miller. The Saints created mid-set separation when Seymour and Miller converted three straight Edwards-assisted kills to push the lead to 16-12. Manhattan worked back within 18-17 and later 21-20, but Siena answered with Wire and Deacy kills before Miller and Wire closed the set.
